SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Endicott College defeated Western New England College, 8-4, in game one and then fell in the nightcap of The Commonwealth Coast Conference double-header, 5-1, to split the twinbill with the Golden Bears on Wednesday in Springfield, Massachusetts.

WNEC freshman pitcher Evan Michaud (Windsor locks, Conn.) had his second-straight complete victory and senior designated hitter Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, Mass.) connected on his first homer of the season in the game two win. Endicott took the opener 8-4 in the battle between two of the top teams in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Michaud (3-0) limited the Gulls to only five hits while striking out eight and walking only one in winning his third-consecutive start. He threw a four-hit shutout at Eastern Nazarene in his last appearance on April 8.

Schwamb belted a two-run homer to right to highlight a three-run first inning and had two hits with two RBI in the opener for a 3-for-6 afternoon.

Sophomore catcher on Jon Dominik (West Springfield, Mass.) had a two-run double in the third while freshman third baseman Tony Trupia (Tolland, Conn.) had a pair of singles and a run.

Junior center-fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, Conn.) had a single, triple, run, and RBI in the first game, but saw his 21-game hitting streak ended after going 0-for-3 with a walk and run in the second contest.

In the first game, freshman right-fielder Luis Uribe (Boston, Mass.) delivered a key two-run single in the third inning as the Gulls scored four times. He also had three of the team's six stolen bases and contributed a double in the nightcap. Endicott now leads the nation in stolen bases per game.

Freshman second baseman Mike Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) added two hits, two RBI, and a stolen base while graduate student designated hitter Erik Fields (Swampscott, Mass.) had two hits with a pair of runs.

Sophomore centerfielder Aaron Santos (Cambridge, Mass.) also had two hits, a run, and a RBI in the twinbill, along with two stolen bases (one in each game) that upped his total to 21 for the season.

Sophomore pitcher Colin McGinn (Tolland, Conn.) went 6 1/3 innings to gain his fourth win in five decisions. He and Trupia were former teammates at Tolland High School in Connecticut.

The Golden Bears are now 19-8 overall and 12-2 in the conference while the Gulls are 15-11 and 9-2 in the league. Endicott returns to action on Saturday as the Blue and Green host Salve Regina University for a conference double-dip beginning at 12:00 p.m.
