Springfield capitalizes on errors, sink Gulls

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Endicott College allowed five runs in the bottom of first and committed a total of six errors in the game, as Springfield College downed the Gulls, 8-5, on Thursday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Pride batted around in the first inning scoring five runs highlighted by a two RBI single by junior Travis Turgeon (Norwich, Conn.). Also chipping in with two RBI was junior Ryan Tatreau (Greenfield, Mass.).

Junior Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass.) led off the bottom of the second with a walk. Michael then advanced to third on a single from Mackie and then scored a run as Christopher Dominguez (Braintree, Mass.) air mailed a ball trying to get senior Ryan Hingston (Windsor, VT) out at first.

The Gulls closed the 6-1 margin to 6-5 in the bottom of the third as Springfield's starting freshman pitcher Dan Reiser (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) gave up four runs. The Gulls capitalized on three Pride errors in the inning. Reiser pitched 2 2/3 innnings giving up one earned run on two hits, while striking out one.

Relieving pitchers Jon Wurster (New Windsor, N.Y.), Mike Searles (East Patchogue) and Mario Piscitelli pitched six plus scoreless innings to end the game for the Pride.

Wurster was the winning pitcher and improves his record to 1-1 while closer Piscitelli recorded his third save of the season.

Springfield College would add two insurance runs as Hingston scored in the eighth on the Gulls' fifth error of the game, and junior Jamie Mackie (Springfield, Mass.) scored in the ninth as Tatreau batted in his second run of the game. Mackie ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Tatreau finished 2-for-5 with one run and two RBI.

The Prides offense was helped by Endicott's six fielding errors as Mackie and sophomore catcher Rob Malaspina (Woodbury, Conn.) had one RBI each.

The Pride return to action on Saturday when it travels for a conference doubleheader with Babson. Endicott retakes the diamond on Friday as it steps back into TCCC play with a double-dip against Wentworth beginning at 4:00 p.m.
