BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College’s \#Colin Doody\# (Wethersfield, Conn.) played the hero again for the men’s soccer team as the freshman scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second overtime to lead the Gulls to a 1-0 victory over Western New England College on Saturday night in Beverly, Mass. Endicott improves to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the TCCC with their third consecutive win while the Golden Bears drop to 3-4 and 0-2 in conference, dropping their third straight decision.
The first half was uneventful as each team tried to figure out each other’s approach. WNEC came out with the slight advantage heading into the break as the Golden Bears held the edge in shots, 6-3, and corners, 7-0. Each goaltender came away unscathed in the frame with WNEC’s Kyle Bak (Cumberland, R.I) making a pair of saves and Endicott’s \#Daniel Higgins\# (Kingstown, R.I.) making one stop.
The Gulls began to fight back in the second half as Endicott outshot the Golden Bears, 6-5. Higgins made three saves in the period including turning away a header from Ryan Dolan (Madison, Conn.) with less than three minutes to play to keep the game knotted at zeroes. WNEC’s Bak made two saves in the frame to help stop the Gulls charge and the game headed into extra time.
WNEC was the lone offensive force in the first OT period as Western New England outshot Endicott at a 3-1 clip. Higgins made another save in the frame while two other chances by Jason Sabia (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Ryan Praleikas (Naugatuck, Conn.) each missed right of the target. The Gulls had their chance to win the game when \#Kevin Magalhaes\# (Westport, Mass.) had an open look at the net but an outstanding defensive save by Marco Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.) turned away the Gulls and sent the game into the second overtime.
The Gulls took their turn in the offensive half as \#Kevin Ivester\# (Topsfield, Mass.) missed a shot wide right a mere :44 seconds into the period. The Gulls would keep possession and on the ensuing attack, Ivester was tripped inside the box, resulting in an Endicott penalty kick. Head coach \#Darren Murray\# decided to go with \#Colin Doody\#, who had scored four goals in his previous two contests, to take the shot and the freshman did not disappoint, planting the ball in the top right corner of the net for a thrilling 1-0 victory and a mobbing from his teammates.
Higgins picked up his third straight win for the Gulls while making five saves in playing just over 105 minutes. Bak made four saves while dropping the decision and also going the distance.
The Blue and Green return to action by wrapping up its five-game home-stand on Tuesday when Endicott hosts cross-town rival Gordon College at 4:00 p.m. WNEC looks to get back on track when it dips into non-conference action against Wesleyan, hosting the Cardinals Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
