BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Jenna Seibold (Reading, Mass.), who is a Sport Management major and a member of both the field hockey and women's ice hockey programs, recently completed an internship at Bauer Hockey. Here's a look into her internship experience.
1) Why Bauer Hockey?
I chose Bauer because after freshman year I realized I wanted to be more on the business side of sports. Growing up playing sports, I also wanted to pick an organization that I know pretty well and also support. Playing hockey for my life, all I have worn is Bauer, so it really is a company that I know I would enjoy seeing all of the behind-the-scenes.
2) What was the process like to obtain your internship?
Once I realized my top choice would be Bauer Hockey, I reached out to a department I would be interested in which was channel marketing. After contacting the head of that department to see if they had internship positions, she then gave my information to HR for further consideration. After an interview, they called to let me know my internship for the summer had been accepted.
3) Describe your overall internship experience.
This internship experience has been awesome. I had been hesitant about a "9-5 in an office" thinking that I was not exactly sure if that would be for me. I came to realize it is not the stereotypical sitting in a chair on a computer for the whole day, but interacting with different departments at all times of the day. What I have enjoyed most about working with Bauer are its purpose and values. A lot of companies may put out what they value, but it is not all the time that these are enforced or actually happening. This company is very team oriented which I find a lot of fun in being a part of. They understand that the company can't run with one or two people, but it must be all departments working together as a unit for one common goal. Working for Bauer reminds me of being on a team, needing good communication, being on the same page, and showing up ready to work and get done what needs to be done.
4) What have you learned from your internship?
This internship has taught me work can be just like sports or school. You need to be prepared and your mind needs to be where your feet are. When there are deadlines, they have to be met, and the tasks need to be done right. At the same time, it has also taught me that the people you are working with genuinely want to help and want to see you succeed. It has really been the people that have taught me more than I could have ever learned from sitting by myself getting tasks done.
5) How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?
This internship will help me with a few things in my career moving forward. It has taught me when you are looking for a company to work for, to make sure that they value their employees and each other, as much as Bauer does. It has also helped me to learn that a job in this industry is definitely something I can see myself doing. After starting my Endicott academic career as an exercise science major my freshman year and now working for Bauer as a sport management major, it has really helped me to figure out the direction for which path I would like to go in.
