Gulls Win Two at Wentworth

Gulls Win Two at Wentworth

Boston, MA-- The Gulls traveled to Wentworth Institute Technology for a Sunday double header, and came home with two victories against the Leopards. EC won the first game in extra innings, 3-2, and the second by a score of 3-1.

In the first game, the Gulls took a one run lead in the top of the third inning on a Megan Young RBI. Young singled up the middle, scoring Laura Schack from third. Wentworth tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and with no runs scored in the seventh, and the game was sent into extra innings.

Using the international tie breaker rule, Paula McGinn was placed on second in the top of the 8th, and advanced to third on an Ashley Labella fielders choice to the pitcher. The speedy McGinn would then dash home and score the go ahead run on a wild pitch. Young then earned a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner Morgan Finegan. Finegan stole second, and came around to score the third run for the Gulls on a Megan Huckins RBI single.

The Gulls held off one last Wentworth surge, allowing the Leopards to come within one, but sophomore Robyn Savitske was stellar on the mound and struck out the last two batters, giving EC the extra inning win. Savitske struck out 15 batters in all and allowed five hits while walking none.

The Gulls came from behind in the second game of the Wentworth double header, scoring three runs in the top of the 7th inning, to give the Gulls the 3-1 victory.

The seventh inning started off with a clutch double by Elyse Colby to start the late inning rally. With Colby on second,Rachel Pearson smacked a double of her own down the left field line, brining in Colby, tying the game at one a piece. Missy Swymer then entered the game to pinch run for Pearson. The next batter saw Katie Doherty single to left field, advancing Swymer to third. Morgan Finegan grounded into a fielder's choice enabling Doherty to advance to second. Swymer and Doherty would both score on a Leopard shortstop throwing error, giving the Gulls their second and third runs of the game.

Pearson was 1-for-3 with one run batted in, while Paula McGinn was 2-for-4. Nicole Reather (7-3) earned the win for the Gulls. Robyn Savitske came in for the save (5) in the 7th inning. With the win, the Gulls improve their overall record to 23-2-1, 16-1 in the Conference. The Gulls host Anna Maria College in a make-up game, tomorrow at 4:00p.m.
