Beverly, Mass. – \#Caitlin Peters\# (Salem, N.H.) played a key role on both ends of the field, setting up a pair of goals and helping to shut down the opposing offense, as the Endicott women's soccer team downed visiting UMass-Dartmouth 2-0 in their home debut. After a scoreless first half, the Gulls scored twice in three minutes to improve to 1-0-1 on the season. The Corsairs fell to 0-1.
Endicott's first goal, which came in the 62nd minute, was assisted by Peters, who came forward from the back line and ripped a right-footed shot on goal. UMass-Dartmouth keeper Liz Stapleton (Wakefield, Mass.) dove to her left to prevent the goal, knocking the ball to the turf. Forward \#Alexandra Sutter\# (Waterbury, Conn.), who was moving on the shot, put the eventual game-winner in the back of the net. The goal was the first of the year for the sophomore.
Exactly three minutes later the Endicott offense struck again, this time thanks to a set-piece. Peters came forward and played a short kick from \#Cheyenne Harris\# (Bernardsville, N.J.). After pushing the ball to her right foot, Peters launched a shot towards the far post. A Corsairs defender blocked the ball into the air, where senior midfielder \#Kayla Corbett\# (Danvers, Mass.) was waiting. Corbett's header rolled just past the line for her second goal of the season.
The Endicott defense ensured the lead would stand up, holding UMass-Dartmouth without a shot on goal for the game. Freshman goalkeeper \#Natalie Wyrsch\# (Dover, N.H.) earned her first career shutout. Liz Stapleton made eight saves for the Corsairs.
The Gulls held a 19-3 advantage in shots including 13-1 in the second half.
Endicott returns to action on Tuesday, September 7 when they host Wellesley at 6:00pm. The Corsairs travel to Newport, Rhode Island on the same day to take on Salve Regina at 4:00 pm.
