Gulls and Vikings battle through double OT in opener

SALEM, Mass. – The defending The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) champions and preseason favorites Endicott Gulls women's soccer team returned to the pitch for their season opener against Salem State University. The Blue and Green battled through two overtimes with the Vikings and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Endicott and Salem State both open their 2010 campaigns with a 0-0-1 record.
The first half saw no goals for the visiting Gulls, who outshot Salem State 9-6 in the first stanza. Vikings keeper Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) made five saves while Endicott's \#Natalie Wyrsch\# (Dover, N.H.) stopped four shots on goal in the first period.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Vikings got on the scoreboard with a goal by senior Erin O'Brien (Hanson, Mass.) with an assist from senior KatyLyn Verrett (Saugus, Mass.).
The Vikings would hold the lead until the 72nd minute when Endicott senior midfielder \#Kayla Corbett\# (Danvers, Mass.) scored the equalizer. \#Caitlin Peters\# (Salem, N.H.) was credited with the assist and the Gulls tied the game at 1-1.
Both teams managed to attempt just two shots each in two overtimes and the match ended with a 1-1 tie.
Endicott outshot Salem State 22-19 and took one more corner kick than the Vikings with a 6-5 advantage. There were four cautions issued in the match as \#Colleen Pepin\# (Fairhaven, Mass.) and \#Karyn Plante\# (Sanford, Maine) earned yellow cards for the Gulls and Taylor Orlando (Danvers, Mass.) and O'Brien were issued cards for the Vikings.
Endicott will look to get in the win column in their home opener on Saturday, September 4th at 1:00 pm against UMass Dartmouth. Salem State travels to WPI for a match on the same day.
