Gulls Fall to Roger Williams in CCC Battle

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's lacrosse team hosted Roger Williams on Wednesday evening for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup. Despite two goals each from senior Ellie Clayman (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass.), Roger Williams senior Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) totaled a game-high four goals and one assist to secure the 9-6 victory. Endicott drops their first CCC contest of the season and first overall game to the Hawks in program history as they sit at 4-3 (1-1 CCC) while the Hawks improve to 4-3 (2-0 CCC).

Endicott will take the field next on Saturday, March 28th as they begin a stretch of four away games, starting with Wellesley for a noon draw. The Hawks will see action next on Saturday as well as they continue CCC competition hosting Gordon at 1:00 p.m.

Behind the four goals by Machette the Hawks recorded 11 draw controls to the Gulls six led by an impressive nine from senior Mackenzie Logan (Sussex, N.J.). For the Blue and Green Lennon led with four to keep the Gulls in the game on the possession.

Defensively Endicott did record 14 caused turnovers to the Hawks 10 led by three from Lennon. Sophomore goalkeeper Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.) worked hard picking up a game-high six groundballs with her seven saves.

The first half showed a strong Roger Williams squad as they opened up with three straight goals in the opening nine minutes of play. Senior Samantha Davenport (Londonderry, N.H.) started off with a free position goal while Machette and sophomore McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) followed suit back to back.

The Blue and Green would end the scoring spree as Lennon paved her way down the field and made a quick play to goal for the 3-1 score. Machette would quickly answer back nine seconds later as the Hawks won the draw and she sprinted down the field for an unassisted goal.

Lennon and Machette would go back and forth tallying one more goal each while Davenport and sophomore Emily Whitney closed out the half with a goal for each side to end it at 9-6 in the Hawks favor.

In the second half Endicott held Roger Williams to just three goals while scoring three of their own.  Senior Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) started off the half for the Hawks after a long 14 minutes of zero scoring for either side at 16:16.

The Gulls would quickly answer back as Clayman and senior Katie Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) went back to back to get the Gulls within two by the 14:12. However, Roger Williams would kick the lead back up to four with a pair of goals from Rahilly and Machette with 5:27 remaining in regulation. Clayman would tally one more for the Blue and Green with 1:35 remaining to get back within three but it was not enough as the Hawks controlled possession off the draw and secured the 9-6 victory.

Grady now sits at 4-3 on the season with the tough loss while her counterpart, sophomore Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) improves to 4-3 with her eight saves and three caused turnovers.
