BEVERLY, Mass. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team swept Wentworth in conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-0 and 9-5 at North Field.
GAME ONE: No. 23 Endicott 3, Wentworth 0
Endicott starter Will Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.) picked up the victory (3-1) on 5 2/3 innings, two hits, zero walks, and a game-high five strikeouts. Ferreira took a no-hit bid all the way into the sixth inning, but gave up a two-out single in the frame before being lifted for closer Will Bryant (Cumberland, Maine) who went on to record his sixth save of the season on just six pitches.
Wentworth starter Ryan Obin (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss (1-3) via six innings of work, eight hits, three runs (all earned), one walk, and a punchout.
Meanwhile, the Gulls' offense featured two RBI singles from Ian Schmidt (Plymouth, Conn.), which came in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, and an RBI by Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) in the fifth.
GAME TWO: No. 23 Endicott 9, Wentworth 5
Endicott rallied from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning with a seven-run third and never looked back.
The Gulls' seven-run frame was highlighted by a pair of two-run homers from Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.). Endicott also saw Brendan McDonald (Quincy, Mass.), Matthew McKinley (Hudson, N.H.), and Dan Cacciola (Saugus, Mass.) drive in one run each in the frame as well.
Joseph Oriola (Pembroke, Mass.) picked up the win (2-1) on 4 2/3 innings, four hits, five runs (all earned), two walks and six strikeouts. Alexander Mandrus (Acton, Mass.) closed out the final 2 1/3 innings to collect his second career save (1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K).
Wentworth's Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) was saddled with the loss (1-2) on two innings, seven hits, six runs (five earned), one walk, and a strikeout.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
- Endicott is 36-9 in the all-time series against Wentworth.
- The Gulls have won the last nine meetings versus the Leopards.
