Tennis Targets Fifth CCC Title Following Semifinal Win over Gordon

2014 CCC Women's Tennis Championship – Interactive Bracket

BEVERLY, Mass. – On Saturday, October 11th, the Endicott women's tennis team will try for their fourth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship in-a-row and their fifth in program history after the tournament's top seeded Gulls advanced past #4 Gordon with a 5-0 decision on Thursday afternoon.

Endicott (11-2), playing in their seventh CCC Championship match in the past eight years, will take on their opponent from the previously three conference finals in #2 Nichols who also defeated their semifinal opponent on Thursday. The Gulls have won each of the last three CCC Championships as the #2 seed and on Nichols' home court but have the opportunity to four-peat at home.

In their regular season meeting back on September 9th, Endicott edged Nichols 5-4 behind the standout play of junior Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) who recorded the match-clinching point after a second-set tiebreaker needed to be played at an indoor facility due to darkness. Newman beat her Bison opponent 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) to end the early season conference showdown.

In Thursday's semifinal against Gordon, Newman provided the match-deciding fifth point by defeating Scots sophomore Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) at the #4 singles position 6-4, 6-0. The first singles match to finish and Endicott's fourth point of the match came from #3 singles freshman Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) who handled Gordon junior Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0.

Earlier in the match, the Blue and Green put themselves in a prominent position to win by sweeping doubles play to take a 3-0 team lead. Number one doubles duo of CCC Player of the Year Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) and Reilly teamed up to defeat Gordon junior Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) by a score of 8-1. Senior #2 doubles partners Natalie Egbert (Gorham, Maine) and Chrissy Martel (Westbrook, Conn.) shutout Drescher and Carol 8-0 while #3 doubles players Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) and Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) scored an 8-1 win to complete the doubles sweep.

The time of Saturday's CCC Championship has not yet been determined due to the potential for poor weather effecting the decision.
