Endicott and Springfield Play to 1-1 2OT Draw

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's soccer team continued its stretch of play against NEWMAC opponents with Saturday's match against Springfield and came out with a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.

In an extremely physical contest between two stout defensive teams, the Gulls opened the scoring in the first half as Gabriella Prisco (West Haven, Conn.) netted her first of the season in the 13th minute off a long cross from Mary Verneris (Hamden, Conn.). Verneris came down the right wing and found Prisco on the left side of the box. The sophomore was able to settle the cross and place her shot in the bottom right corner of the net to give the Gulls the 1-0 edge.

Springfield would counter in the 62nd minute off Sara Swetland's (Manchester, N.H.) seventh of the season to knot the match up at 1-1.

Both keepers were strong in the draw with Endicott's Kayla Wentworth (Taunton, Mass.) making 11 saves on the 12 shots she faced, setting a new career-best mark for her career in Blue and Green. Springfield's Jackie Davis (Ringoes, N.J.) made six saves on the seven shots she faced.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott's defensive efforts limited a Springfield offense that had posted a combined 12 goals against Roger Williams and Western New England to just one goal on Saturday.
  • This was the first ever draw between the two storied programs as Springfield now holds a slight 2-1-1 edge in the series.
  • In four matches this season, Endicott has already gone the distance of two overtimes twice, both coming in the last two matches (Clark | Springfield).

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (1-1-2) plays their third straight NEWMAC opponent on Tuesday night at 7 PM when the Gulls play host to Wellesley. Springfield will stay on the road and travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 7 PM start on Tuesday as well.
