Sunday, November 2, 2008 marked the first ever Barely Afloat Halloween Regatta on the Upper Charles River n Auburndale, MA. The regatta was a great opportunity for small college rowing programs in the area (Endicott, Roger Williams, Wentworth, and Brandeis) to compete on more even ground than at larger regattas.
Unlike in traditional fall regattas, which feature a 5k time-trial style head race, this regatta consisted of a 3k time trial and a 1k standing start spring. The over times were calculated by the following formula: 3k time + (3 * 1k time).
The highlight of the day, was the Women's Novice 4+ (C: Kaitlyn Walker, 4: Natalie Leveille, 3: Emily Heath, 2: Samantha Brown, and Emily Calkins), where the Gulls took 2nd in both the time trial and sprint portions of the race. In an exciting spring, the ladies finished just 1.8 seconds behind the winning boat from Wentworth, which bodes very well for the 2000m spring races.
The men's novice 4+ also showed encouraging signs. After spending most the season with just 3 men on the roster, the crew welcomed freshman Jeremy Schlosser to the team. Despite the crew finishing last overall, they held off the Brandeis B 4+ in the 1k spring, which was only Jeremy's 4th time on the water.
The women's varsity 4+, containing two tired rowers who had already raced earlier in the novice boat, finished out the day in last. However, in the sprint they finished in front of the Wentworth crew and only 9 seconds behind the 1st place overall Brandeis crew.
Coach Chorney would like to congratulate the team of an outstanding end to the Fall 2008 and hopes the 1k sprints are only a glimmer of what will come in the spring.
