Women's Volleyball Closes Out Stevens Tech Invite With A Pair Of Wins

HOBOKEN, N.Y. – The Endicott women's volleyball team swept its final pair of matches against Kean University and Stevens Tech on Saturday by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, respectively, on the last day of the Stevens Tech Invitational. The Gulls defeated Kean University by set scores of 25-23, 25-14, 24-26, and 25-18 in match one of the day and bested Stevens Tech by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 16-25, and 15-9 in the nightcap.

MATCH ONE: Endicott 3, Kean University 1 (25-23, 25-14, 24-26, 25-18)

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) powered Endicott's offense with a career-high 23 kills on 55 swings for a .291 hitting percentage.

Junior outside Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) contributed 17 kills (.295 hitting percentage), 11 digs, four service aces, and one block assist to the win, while classmate Hayley Knapp (Valencia, Calif.) added nine kills (.211 hitting percentage), five digs, and one service ace.

Alleigh VandeMerkt (Riverside, Ill.) ran the majority of the offense for the Gulls as she dished out a match-high 26 assists. VandeMerkt also collected 14 digs in the match for her third double-double of the season.

Freshman Mareena Clotfelter (Poulsblo, Wash.) registered 22 assists and nine digs, while senior Lexi Watts (Rancho Bernardo, Calif.) rounded out the list of highlights for the Blue and Green with seven kills, three assists, two digs and two block assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With 17 kills and 11 digs in today's match, McIntyre now has three double-doubles this season.
  • Sophomore libero Cydney Pierce (Santa Barbara, Calif.) went 24-for-26 (.923) on serve-receive in addition to her match-high 22 digs. Pierce has now compiled 20 or more digs in six matches in 2015.
  • Endicott hit .424 in set two using 15 kills on 33 swings to secure a swift 25-14 victory in the set.
  • The Gulls tallied eight block assists including a team-high two block assists from Sheehan and junior Kelli Sugrue (Tewksbury, Mass.).

FOR THE FOES

  • Sophomore Calli Scheuermann (Kenilworth, N.J.) paced the Cougars with ten kills and ten assists for her second double-double of the season.
  • Freshman Vikki Stec (Elmwood Park, N.J.) added eight kills, while Kassie Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) had seven kills, two service aces and nine digs in the loss.
  • Sophomore Kendall Sonico (Los Angeles, Calif.) facilitated the offense with 16 assists alongside eight digs.
  • Nicollette Poveromo (Dumont, N.J.) tallied 12 assists and eight digs.
  • The Cougars were dominant at the front of the net with two block solos and 14 block assists for nine blocks total in the match. Sophomore Joelle Tondi (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) highlighted play at the net for Kean with one block solo and a season-high six block assists.

MATCH TWO: Endicott 3, Stevens Tech (25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 16-25, 15-9)

McIntyre fueled the offense with her second double-double of the day as the junior outside hitter put home 15 kills, and also added three service aces and 19 digs. Sheehan chipped in with 13 kills, four digs, one block solo, and one block assist. The sophomore outside hitter also went perfect on serve-receive successfully bumping up 21 attempts.

Knapp aided the Gulls' attack with eight kills, while Sugrue recorded seven kills on ten attempts for a .500 hitting percentage to go along with two block assists and one dig in the win.

VaneMerkt ran most of the offense for the second straight match with 25 assists – in addition to 11 digs – while Clotfelter set up 19 kills and tallied one service ace and six digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Pierce tallied 21 digs and also sported a .913 serve-receive percentage (21-for-23).
  • The Gulls compiled eight blocks (one solo, 14 assisted) in the match to tie their second-highest total this season.
  • As a team, Endicott registered a .958 serve-receive percentage to Stevens Tech's .904 percentage.
  • The Gulls recorded nine service aces. Endicott's season-high in 2015 is 17 against Stockton.

FOR THE FOES

  • Junior Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) led all student-athletes with 18 kills in the loss. Sciarra hit .229, and also had eight digs, two blocks, and one service ace.
  • Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) notched 16 kills and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while Emily Ferguson (Wimberley, Texas) sent home 14 swings and collected 16 digs for her first double-double of the year to highlight the offense.
  • Senior Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) dished out a match-high 46 assists, alongside 13 digs in the loss. Shelton now has five double-doubles this season and has also recorded 40 or more assists in two matches this year as well.
  • Sophomore Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) paced all student-athletes with a season-high 31 digs.
