UMass Boston Blanks Women’s Volleyball, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's volleyball team fell to UMass Boston, 3-0, by set scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-18 on Wednesday night at the Clark Athletic Gym.

After tie scores of 1-1 and 3-3, respectively, in set one, the Beacons never trailed for the remainder of the night to earn the victory over the Gulls.

UMass Boston hit over .240 in every set, including a match-high .270 in the opening frame, to compile a .255 hitting percentage overall in the match – the Beacons second highest total this season.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) paced Endicott's attack with five kills, while juniors Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) and Hayley Knapp (Valencia, Calif.), and senior Lexi Watts (Rancho Bernardo, Calif.) all had four kills apiece in the loss.

Defensively, sophomore libero Cydney Pierce (Santa Barbara, Calif.) registered six digs and a perfect 21-for-21 showing on the serve-receive for the Gulls. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Graduate student Alleigh VandeMerkt (Riverside, Ill.) dished out a team-high ten assists to keep her current string of double-digit assists in a match going at 116 straight. VandeMerkt also recorded nine digs falling one shy of her third double-double this year.
  • Endicott did not hit over .100 as a team for the first time this season breaking up a stretch of nine straight matches with a .150 hitting percentage or better.

FOR THE FOES

  • Junior Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) led all student-athletes in kills with 12 on 23 swings for a .478 hitting percentage (one error).
  • Classmate Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass.) notched ten kills on 16 swings for a match-high .562 hitting percentage.
  • Pepper Baker (Tallahasse, Fla.) facilitated the Beacons' offense with 30 assists to go along with five digs. Baker now has 30 or more assists in three matches this season.
  • Junior Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) bumped up a match-high 26 attacks from the back row and also tallied a .941 serve-receive percentage (16-for-17).
  • The Beacons' block collected seven blocks on the night, five solo and four assisted, for their fifth highest output at the net in their 2015 campaign. UMass Boston's season-high in that category is 11, which came against Christopher Newport University in a 3-1 loss on September 11.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (6-4) travels to Hoboken, N.J. this weekend for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at the Stevens Tech Invitational. The Gulls will open play on Friday against Stockton at 6 p.m. before taking on New York University at 8 p.m. Endicott will then play Kean University (1 p.m.) and Stevens Tech (3 p.m.) on Saturday.

UMass Boston (2-7) visits Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday for a conference matchup at 12 p.m.
