WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Endicott
women’s tennis team battled to take two out of three possible
points in doubles action over Elizabethtown (Pa.) in the NCAA
Division III Tournament, but their opponents rallied to take the
first four singles matches to go final as the Gulls ended their
season with a 5-2 loss.
With a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, Endicott appeared
poised to make a run at their first tournament win in just their
second appearance in program history. Number one and number
two singles players Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) and
Emilie Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) took their first
sets 6-0 and 6-2, respectively, but the first set for the three
through six singles went to Elizabethtown.
As singles play progressed, Elizabethtown’s Kristi
Noecker (Mohrsville, Pa.) handed Annis a 6-1, 6-3 defeat
at the \#4 position to even the score at 2-2. Moments
later, Blue Jays junior Allison Burkhardt (Cherry Hill,
N.J.) gave Gulls freshman Amy Heacox (Marion,
Mass.) a straight-set loss and gave her team their first
lead of the match at 3-2.
Endicott junior Gina Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.) dropped her first
set 6-3 to Sarah Poulle (Wilmington, Del.), but
battled in the second set looking to force a third. Poulle,
however, fended off Pinciaro 6-4 to extend the Blue Jay lead
4-2.
Needing to win each of the final three singles matches remaining
(1,2,5), attention turned to Endicott freshman Natalie
Egbert (Gorham, Maine) who lost her first set, but fought
back to tie her second set 6-6 with Christine Evangelista
(Harrisburg, Pa.). Evangelista, however, came out on
top 7-6 to end the match 5-2.
Cioffi’s match went unfinished at 6-0, 3-6, 3-0 and
Cloutier’s did the same at 6-2, 1-6, 1-3.
Cioffi and Annis teamed up to take the first point of the match,
an 8-6 win at \#1 doubles. Egbert and Laura MacLeod
(Stoneham, Mass.) lost 8-4 at the \#2 doubles matches but
Cloutier and Heacox made a stunning comeback in \#3 doubles to give
Endicott the early lead. Trailing 7-6 and on the edge of
losing, Cloutier and Heacox tied the match then claimed outright
victory 9-7 over their Elizabethtown counterparts.
