Gulls Sweep Wentworth on the Road in Doubleheader

BOSTON, Mass. – The Endicott softball team traveled to Wentworth on Monday afternoon for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) double header. In game one junior Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Margaret Martzolf (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) lead the Gulls with three RBI's each in the 13-0 victory. In game two Endicott came back to tie the game in the sixth with an RBI from junior Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) before earning three runs in the eighth for the 6-3 triumph. Endicott improves to 12-10 (9-2 CCC) while the Leopards fall to 2-18 (0-12 CCC).

Endicott will take the field next tomorrow, April 14th as they host non-conference opponent Babson for a single game at 3:30 p.m. Wentworth will see action next on Wednesday, April 145th as they travel to non-conference opponent Daniel Webster for a double header starting at 3:30 p.m.

Game One: Endicott 13, Wentworth 0

Junior Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) hurled her 11th complete game of the season as she allowed just one hit in the shutout victory. The junior recorded eight strikeouts while throwing 54 strikes on 71 total pitches. Blake pitched five 1-2-3 inning out of the seven total while not allowing a single hit until the seventh inning.

On the offensive end the Blue and Green brought their bats to Boston as they put up 13 runs on 16 hits and 11 RBIs. Hoffman and Martzolf lead the team in game one with three ribbies each while sophomore Lexi Pederson (Chandler, Ariz.) followed with two. Also recording an RBI in the triumph was juniors Corda, Sam DiBella (Danvers, Mass.), and sophomore Julia McNeill (Hauppage, N.Y.).

Endicott got on the board first in the opening inning after DiBella cranked a double to left center to send Corda in for the first run of the day. With the bases loaded, Wentworth pitcher, senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) would walk Pederson to allow DiBella to score.

After a scoreless second inning the Gulls added another run in the top of the third as McNeill took advantage of a throwing error by the Leopards infield and crossed home plate for the 3-0 lead. In the fifth, Pederson would earn her second RBI of the day as she singled to center field with Hoffman in scoring position for the 4-0 score.

In the top of the sixth Hoffman would sacrifice to send McNeill around the bases while Martzolf doubled to left to allow DiBella to take off for home. Heading into the top of the seventh the Blue and Green held a 6-0 lead but the Gulls were not finished as they scored seven more runs in the top of the seventh for the 13-0 final.

In the inning Corda and McNeill recorded a single RBI while Hoffman doubled to left field to send McNeill and DiBella home for two ribbies. Martzolf would close out the inning as she cranked her first home run of her collegiate career with Hoffman on base.

Game Two: Endicott 6, Wentworth 3 – 8 innings

In game two the Blue and Green made an impressive late comeback tying the game in the sixth to force extra innings where they went on to score three for the 6-3 victory. Senior Meg Donegan (Atkinson, N.H.) started in the circle for the Gulls hurling four innings before Blake came in to hurl the final four innings. Blake recorded four strikeouts in the victory.

The Leopards got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Curran singled to right field to send freshman Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) home from third. With runners on second and third junior Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) scarified to right field to send Curran in for the 2-0 lead.

The Gulls would answer back in the top of the third after DiBella launched a double to left field to wrap Corda around the bases from first base to make it a one run game. After a scoreless third and fourth from both sides Endicott tied up the game in the top of the fifth after freshman Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) singled to second to allow Hoffman to score from third.

The Leopards would break the tie and take back to lead in the bottom of the fifth as Curran added another RBI to the stat sheet sending Berryman in for the 3-2 score. In the top of the sixth, Corda would double to left field to give sophomore Lindsee Allienello (East providence, R.I.) plenty of space to take off for home from second to force a 3-3 game.

After a scoreless seventh, the Blue and Green secured the game winner as freshman Stephanie Cameron (Milford, Conn.), DiBella and Hoffman all recorded RBI's while Blake closed out the bottom with a 1-2-3 inning for the triumph.
