BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott softball team hosted non-conference opponent Wellesley on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader. The Gulls fell in game one 11-2 and in game two 8-5, despite last inning efforts. With the losses the Blue and Green move to 13-6 (6-1 CCC) while the Blue improve to 15-7 (9-1 NEWMAC).
Endicott will take the field next on Friday, April 11th as they travel to CCC opponent Salve Regina for a double header at 4/6PM.
Game One: Endicott 2, Wellesley 11
In game one the Blue scored four runs in back to back innings to take an early 8-0 lead by the fourth. In the top of the second inning junior Emilyrose Havrilla (Caldwell, N.J.) hit a two-run homerun off of sophomore pitcher Katherine Clark (Taunton, Mass.). The Blue wrapped up the inning with two more runs making it a 4-0 score.
After a 1-2-3 bottom second by the Gulls, sophomore pitcher, Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) took the circle to relieve Clark in the top of the third. With a runner on second, freshman Anna Pisac (Snohomish, Wash.) doubled to right center to bring freshman Kendra Coleman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) home making it a 5-0 game.
With Pisac on third, junior Abby Casey (Milford, Conn.) singled to right center to bring Coleman home. To wrap up the inning twin sister, Ashtyn Coleman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) doubled bringing Casey home to take the 8-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning for both sides, Wellesley earned their ninth run of the game in the top of the fifth off a Pisac homerun. The Blue and Green finally answered back in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) stepped up to the plate with junior Jess Linden (Stratford, Conn.) on third, and singled to third base to bring Linden home.
The Blue scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory in game one.
Game Two: Endicott 5, Wellesley 8
Game two showed a stronger Gulls squad that posted five runs in the sixth inning in their comeback attempt. Senior Nell O'Connor (Harwich, Mass.) hurled five innings for the Blue and Green while junior Meg Donegan (Atkinson, N.H.) entered in the sixth inning pitching the final two.
The Blue got on the board early in the top of the second as K.Coleman singled to right center bringing Pisac and Havrilla around the bases for a 2-0 lead. Wellesley continued their push entering the bottom of the third as a pickle situation with junior Maria LaBouyer (Yuba City, Calif.) between first and second allowed sophomore Jaclyn Tsang (Manalapan, N.J.) to take off for home plate.
After a scoreless fourth inning for both sides Wellesley tallied three more runs in the top of the fifth before the Gulls started to light up the scoreboard. In the bottom of the sixth the Blue and Green scored five runs on six hits. The first came from freshman Chrissy Gikas (Danvers, Mass.) who singled down the right field line to bring junior Sam Cila (Wakefield, Mass.) home.
With runners in scoring position, senior Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.) singled to third base and earned an RBI as freshman Julia McNeill (Hauppauge, N.Y.) took home. With Gikas on third, freshman Rachel Couto (Chelmsford, Mass.) sacrificed to left field. With bases loaded senior Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass.) walked to first which brought Linden home to score the fourth run of the inning. To wrap it up sophomore Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) singled up the middle to bring Bilafer around the bases making it one run game entering the top of the seventh.
In the top of the seventh Casey and Tsang each sealed the victory with a pair of solo homeruns to end the game on top 8-5.
