Youth Leads Gulls To Ninth Place Finish At RWU Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I.- The Endicott men's cross country team got off to a solid start for the 2015 season on Saturday as they raced to a ninth place finish in the 14 team field at the Roger Williams Invitational.

The Gulls were led by sophomore Zach Marshall (Hinesburg, Vt.) who finished 14th individually in a time of 16:54 on the 5k course. His finish earned the team 14 points for the team standings in the field of 144 runners.

Fellow sophomore James Dwyer (Kennebunk, Maine) crossed the line nearly 30-seconds quicker than in 2014 in a time of 17:38 to finish in 40th place, and earning 33 points.

The remainder of the scoring was completed by freshmen Patrick Finocchiaro (Salem, N.H.) who raced well in his first collegiate competition, crossing in a time of 17:59 and 54th place overall. Ryan Sifuentes (Plainville, Conn.) and Maximillion Young (Weymouth, Mass.) finished in identical official times of 19:18 as they crossed in 95th and 96th place to close out the scoring for the Gulls with a team score of 241 and in ninth place.

INSIDE THE TIMES

  • Marshall was in familiar territory after the race as he finished the race as Endicott's top runner, something he has done dating back to his first collegiate race last year. His 14th place finish was his fourth career top-15 finish.
  • Endicott finished just three spots back of Gordon and one back of Salve Regina, while they edged out the host Roger Williams as they finished 10th in the team standings.

TOP QUOTE

"On both sides, there were highly ranked regional teams," stated head coach Spencer Lange. "It was good to get exposure for the freshman against both conference and regional competition. We are focused on training through the first few meets to prepare them and remain healthy for championship season.

WHAT'S NEXT

The men remain on the road and out of state for their next two races as they travel to the UNE Invitational on September 12 at Rotary Park in Biddeford, Maine and then the Bowdoin Invitational on September 26 at Bowdoin in Brunswick, Maine. Endicott's first race in Massachusetts is on Saturday, October 10 at the James Early Invitational in Westfield, Mass.
