Men's soccer blanked by Springfield
Springfield, Mass. - Springfield scored a pair of goals in each half as it blanked visiting Endicott College, 4-0, in a non-conference contest on Thursday evening on Brock-Affleck Field.  The loss drops the Blue and Green to 0-6-1 while Springfield improves to 5-2 and snaps a two-game losing skid.

Springfield took advantage of the game’s first corner kick as it found the back of the net just over eight minutes into the contest. Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) sent his corner into the middle of the box, which classmate Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.) promptly headed into the top left corner of the goal to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

Endicott put on its first real offensive pressure of the opening half as it strung together a pair of dangerous shots with just under 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.  \#Craig Jameson\#’s (Bedford, N.H.) bid from 20 yards out deflected off a Springfield defender on its way to the net, but goalkeeper Chris Walton (Cromwell, Conn.) was able to keep the visitors off the board after he punched it over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick, \#Ryan Coates\# (Wethersfield, Conn.) let loose a well-struck ball from 18 yards that was right at Walton, who registered the save.

Vanasse registered his second goal of the half as he once again got free on a Springfield corner kick. This time, Scott Saucier’s (Derry, N.H.) ball found Vanasse on the back post, and the freshman made no mistake as he headed in the Pride’s second strike at the 40:53 mark.

Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) got into the scoring mix on a free-kick goal in the 62nd minute. Malone hammered a swerving ball from 40 yards out past Endicott keeper \#Daniel Higgins\# (Kingstown, R.I.) and extended the lead to three.

The Pride continued its offensive pressure and benefited from a penalty kick goal just two minutes later. After Matt Williams was fouled in the box, Springfield was awarded a penalty kick. Scott Donofrio (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed his attempt into top right corner for the Pride’s fourth goal.

Endicott finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in shots. Walton tallied four saves as he earned his fourth clean sheet of the season. Higgins made one stop in the loss.

The Gulls return to action on Saturday when they travel to Quincy, Massachusetts to take on Eastern Nazarene. It will be the team’s third game in five days. Springfield returns to conference play on Saturday afternoon when it takes on No. 23 Wheaton College at 1:00 pm.
