SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In a rematch of last year’s championship series of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball tournament, Endicott was again beaten twice by Western New England University. The Golden Bears ran their win streak to eight games with 14-6 and 7-2 victories over the Gulls Sunday at Trelease Park.

The Gulls, after moving over the .500 mark with two wins yesterday, are now 10-11 and fall to 5-3 in the CCC. WNE improves to 13-6, and is perfect in the CCC at 6-0.

Game 1 – Western New England 14, Endicott 6

Endicott sophomore shortstop EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, NY) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, and RBI. Senior designated hitter Daniel Mello (Peabody, MA) added a single, double, run, and a pair of runs-batted-in.

After falling behind 4-0, the Gulls tied the game up with four runs in the top of the third inning. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears broke a 4-4 tie with 10 runs in the third inning highlighted by a three-run homer by junior right fielder Matt Anthonis (Guilford, Conn.)who also singled and doubled in the game. He scored two runs as did junior shortstop Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY) who had two doubles with two RBI.

Endicott senior starter Michael Nich (Orange, CT) lasted only two innings allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) while walking one and striking out one to fall to 1-2.

Sophomore Brendan Nugent (Milford, CT) pitched six innings giving up nine hits and five runs with no walks and five strikeouts for WNE. Nugent is now 4-0 this season.

Senior catcher Tyler Issadore (Hingham, MA) contributed two hits, two runs scored, and three runs-batted-in. Second baseman Tim Clark (West Springfield, Mass.) chipped-in with a single, double, run, and RBI.

Game 2 – Western New England 7, Endicott 2

The Gulls scored both their runs in the fifth on triples by freshman third baseman Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, MA) and senior right fielder Michael Russo (Natick, MA), and a single by sophomore pinch-hitter Taylor English (Barre, VT).

Junior Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, MA) (1-2) took the loss, giving up six runs over three and a third innings.

Sophomore Connor McLaughlin (Clinton, Mass.) was effective in relief, pitching two and a third scoreless innings of two hit ball and collecting one strike-out.

Clark continued his hot hitting by collecting three singles to cap a 10-hit weekend (he also had five hits in a doubleheader sweep over Nichols on Saturday). The big hit of the game was a grand slam homer by McKelvey on a 3-and-2 count with two outs in the third inning. The Golden Bears added three runs in the fourth as junior left fielder Taylor Perun (Plainville, CT) knocked in two runs with a two-out single. He finished with two hits along with Anthonis who again scored twice.

Junior Kevin Jefferis (Cheshire, CT) won his first game of the season in three decisions after pitching five strong innings allowing just five hits and both runs while walking one batter and striking out eight.

Endicott will next play two non-conference games at North Field. The Gulls will host Southern Maine on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. On Wednesday, Bates will come to town for a single nine-inning game starting at 4:00 pm.
