BEVERLY, MA - Endicott College took sole possession of first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Sunday afternoon, scoring two victories over Roger Williams in an afternoon doubleheader.
The first game was a pitchers' duel that was scoreless into the seventh inning when the Gulls put up the only run of the game en route to a 1-0 win.
Endicott scored five runs in the first inning of the second game and rolled to a 13-4 triumph over the Hawks.
The Gulls moved to 7-1 in the CCC (9-11 overall) with the sweep over RWU (12-13, 9-5 CCC).
Roger Williams starter and hard-luck loser was Brockton native, Mike Malcolm. The crafty lefthanded pitcher kept Endicott off balance all game, allowing just one hit and no EC batter made solid contact.
Malcolm ran into trouble in the seventh when the Gulls put men on first and second with no outs on back-to-back walks to Dan Gomez (East Londmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) and Steve Vidmosko Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep). With the infield drawn in, senior Mark Vaughan (North Reading, MA/North Reading) recorded the hosts only hit on a grounder three steps to the right of shortstop Kevin Thompson, who made a diving stop on the ball but could not gun down Mike Sorrentino (Waltham, MA/Waltham) at the plate. Vaughan's hit broke up the no-hit bid for Malcolm and Sorrentino scored the game-winning run standing up.
Endicott got another great start from Ian Parkinson (Peabody, MA/Peabody). The junior spun a gem, fanning seven and walking just one during his complete-game shut out win. He wiggled out of a bases loaded, two-out jam in the sixth, catching Jamie Dahill looking at a called third strike to end the threat. Parkinson improved to 3-1 with the win and has a CCC ERA south of one run.
After a rocky first inning of game two, Endicott senior Matt Bishop (Woburn, MA/Woburn), settled down to pitch a one-hitter over six innings of duty. Justin Negrotti (Beverly, MA/Beverly) worked the seventh to nail down the win.
Roger Williams posted two runs in the top of first. After a error and a walk, Hawks' catcher, Travis Cooney, belted a two run double to left. That would be the only hit Bishop would allow as he struck out nine and walked four while improving his record to 2-1.
The Gulls struck for five runs in the bottom of the first aided by three walks and two hit batsmen. Vidmosko and Gavin Softic (Athol, MA/Athol/Cushing Academy) had run-scoring singles to send the Gulls on their way. Bishop helped his own cause with three hits on a pair of doubles and a triple. He also drove in three runs while Kevin Donahue (Reading, MA/Reading) scored four runs and had two hits and Erik Fields (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) and Softic delivered two hits apiece.
Endicott continues its CCC schedule with a doubleheader at Anna Maria Monday at 2:00 PM.
