Rocky Mount, NC - The Endicott Gulls fueled on a stellar relief performance by sophomore John Bedard (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) were able to get their first victory of the season defeating North Carolina Wesleyan College (15-9) by a final score of 6-4. Leading the Gulls offensive effort was sophomore Dan Gomez (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) who was a perfect three for three and three RBI's.
Junior Mike Daggett (Sabattus, ME/Oak Hill) settled down after a shaky first inning in which he let up a home run to Battling Bishops sophomore outfielder Matthew Smith (Stedman, NC/Cape Fear). Bedard replaced Daggett in the seventh inning with one out and in his first full inning of relief he was able to get out of a big jam when Smith was on third base with one out. Two consecutive ground ball outs to junior Steve Vidmosko (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) allowed the Gulls to escape the inning with the lead they obtained earlier in the inning.
The Gulls got that lead earlier in the inning when senior Kevin Donahue (Reading, MA/Reading) and Vidmosko had back to back walks. Senior Matt Bishop (Woburn, MA/Woburn) then continued his hot hitting when he missed a home run by inches and ended up with a double scoring Donahue. Gomez then had a sacrifice fly that scored Vidmosko. The Gulls then added an insurance run in the ninth inning when Abe Bellini (Watertown, MA/Watertown) stole second base. An overthrow by Bishops catcher Ted Williams (Rocky Mount, NC/Northern Nash) allowed Bellini to move on to third and another overthrow by Smith into the Bishops dugout allowed Bellini to cross home plate uncontested.
The Gulls with the win improved to 1-5 on the season and travel to Salisbury, MD where they will play a double-header against St. Joseph's (ME) tomorrow, Saturday March 25, 2006 at 1:00pm.
