EC Wins 1st CCC Round

Wenham, MA-- In the 1st round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, the EC women's tennis team soared to new heights at Gordon College. The Gulls who are ranked 5th in the Tournament, defeated the 4th ranked Fighting Scots by a score of 6-3. This is the second time this season the Gulls and Fighting Scots matched up. In the regular season match, EC lost to GC, 8-1.

The doubles matches went out first and the team of Blythe Langley and Lauren Gibbons beat Diana Anderson and Erin Ovalle in a very close match, winning 8-6. In the regular season match up between the two doubles teams, Lauren and Blythe lost to GC, 7-9. "Their doubles game has improved all season and this win was proof of their progress," Head Coach Gale Bacon commented.

The doubles team of Carli Conners and Brianne Cogan were also victorious. "Carli and Bri are great at attacking the net and dominating with their strong volley's and overheads," Coach Bacon said. Their match was very close but Bri and Carli took over the net defeating their opponent, 8-6.

The Gulls took four of the six singles matches with Lauren Gibbons at \#2 singles taking the first win 6-3, 6-0. Carli at \#3 singles won easily in the 1st set 6-1, but had a close 2nd set match 7-5 (7-5). Stephanie Branch followed with a close 1st set at 7-5, but took over in the second set with her steady groundstrokes and competitive edge, winning at 6-0.

Brianne won her eight game pro set with her deep top spin ground strokes and her strong net game, winning 8-5.

The Gulls play the \#1 ranked Salve Regina University next Wednesday, October 20th at Salve Regina. The match begins at 2:00pm.
