Endicott splits final day at MIT Tournament

Endicott splits final day at MIT Tournament
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After going 1-1 the night before, Endicott closed out the second day of competition at the MIT Invitational Tournament with a 3-2 win over Vassar, followed by a 3-0 setback to Wellesley College. The Gulls, who now stand at 7-7 overall, return to The Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday when they return home to face Wentworth.

A back-and-forth match with the Brewers eventually ended with a 3-2 Endicott win. Vassar, who was the fourth-ranked team in New York, opened the morning contest with a 25-23 win. Endicott responded by taking the second and third sets, 25-23 and 30-28, before suffering a 25-15 setback in game No. 4. The Blue and Green responded, however, as the Gulls closed out the match with an exclamation point 15-5 win.

\#Steph Wiese\# (Higganum, Conn) led the way with 16 kills, 21 digs and two blocks in the victory. \#Brittany Phillips\# (Sudbury, Mass.) had 13 kills, three aces and 23 digs while \#Amy Grigg\# (Vernon, Conn.) had eight blocks for the Gulls (seven assisted, one solo). \#Elyse Barbour\# (Greenville, R.I.) chipped in with a 12 kill and five block effort while freshman libero \#Ashley Norley\# (Sudbury, Mass.) notched an impressive 30 digs in the win.

Despite the strong victory over Vassar, Endicott’s fortunes turned as the Blue and Green fell in a rematch of last year’s first round NCAA Regional match-up against Wellesley. The Blue used set scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 26-24 to hold off the Gulls. Phillips ended the afternoon with seven kills and 10 digs while \#Ally Murphy\# (Nashua, N.H.) had 11 assists. \#Amy Grigg\# had four kills on just seven swings in the loss.
