Gulls stay perfect in conference, sweep Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Endicott College women's volleyball team snapped TCCC rival Colby-Sawyer College's seven match winning streak, as the Gulls swept the 7th-ranked team in New England, 3-0. The Gulls posted set scores of 25-17, 28-26, and 25-16 in win; improving their conference record to a perfect 8-0. The loss drops the Chargers to 7-2 in TCCC action.

Endicott jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set behind the hitting of freshman Elyse Barbour (Greenville, R.I.), who finished the first set with five kills. Barbour tallied 11 kills for the match. The Chargers tried to keep it close down the stretch but five points would be the closest they would come. Colby-Sawyer junior Meg White (Monroe, Conn.) was 4-4 on attack attempts, leading the Chargers attack in the first set. White finished the match with five kills and five digs.

The second set was back and forth the entire way, with the Gulls squeaking out a 28-26 win on an ace by senior Hayley Janelle (Madbury, N.H.). The set included 20 ties before the Gulls scored two straight at 26-26 to take the set 28-26. Janelle also led the way for the Gulls, registering five kills in the set. Endicott teammate sophomore Brittany Phillips (Sudbury, Mass.) also had five kills in the set. Phillips finished the match with 11 kills. Keeping pace with the Gulls in the set was Colby-Sawyer sophomore Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) who had four kills. Doody finished the match with 11 kills.

The Chargers led halfway through the third set at 14-13. Endicott scored four straight points to take a 17-14 lead. The Gulls would not look back from that point, ending the set on an 8-2 run. Barbour had kills in the set to lead Endicott. Doody also had four kills for the Chargers.

Also having solid performances for Endicott was junior Steph Wiese (Higganum, Conn.), who finished with eight kills, 11 digs and five aces. Senior Casey Ward (Monroe, Conn.) had a match-high 23 assists to go along with seven digs. Senior libero Brittany Nolan (Monroe, Conn.) also had a big night, notching 14 digs for the Blue and Green. Freshman Ali Canty (Moraga, Calif.) came off the bench in the third set for the visitors and played standout defense to help secure the win.

For the Chargers, senior Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) finished with five blocks and two aces. Junior Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) had 22 assists and eight digs.

The Chargers will host a tri-match on Saturday, October 25 with matches against Bates and Plattsburgh. Colby-Sawyer will play Bates in Mercer gym at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match against Plattsburgh at 5:00 p.m. in the Hogan Sports Center. Endicott travels to Connecticut College on Saturday for a tri-match against Coast Guard and the host school.
