EASTON, Mass. - Stonehill College used 12 service aces and strong defense to halt a two-match losing streak, sweeping Endicott in a cross division women's volleyball contest on Monday evening in Easton, Mass. The victory improves the Skyhawks to 11-8 overall while Endicott falls to 13-8.
Stonehill fell behind early but used 10-0 run midway through the first set to distance themselves from the Gulls and win the first set 25-16.
In the second set the Skyhawks played Endicott even for the first half of the set before going on a 4-0 to put the match out of reach and come away with a 25-19 win.
Stonehill was helped by service aces and good passing in the third set, recording a .286 attack percentage with only five errors to come away with a 25-18 victory.
Freshman Michelle Thornhill (Canyon Lake, Calif.) was a triple threat for the Skyhawks as she had 11 kills, four service aces and seven digs. Sophomore's Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H.) and Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) provided the defense for Stonehill. Noonan had five and half blocks and three kills, while Wirth added a team high nine digs to go along with 21 assists for the Skyhawks.
Endicott was paced by freshman Elyse Barbour's (Greenville, R.I.) eight kills. Steph Wiese (Higganum, Conn.) had five kills and three digs while Brittany Nolan (Sudbury, Mass.) had four kills and four digs. Hayley Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) posted five blocks while Brittany Nolan (Monroe, Conn.) had 10 digs in the losing effort.
Stonehill returns to action when it travels to Aldephi on Saturday, October 11 with their match beginning at 1:00 pm. Endicott hosts a pair of home matches on Wednesday evening with a 5:00 p.m. start against Salem State and a TCCC showdown with Western New England following at 7:00. The Endicott vs. WNEC match can be seen live through Endicott All-Access beginning at 6:55 p.m.
