Gulls drop two to top New England teams

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Endicott College women's volleyball team suffered two difficult set backs on Friday night losing to Tufts and Wellesley at the Tufts Invitational. The Gulls were able to take a game from the top team in New England against Tufts, losing 3-1, but were swept by Wellesley, 3-0.

Against Tufts, the number one team in New England, the Gulls lost the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-20 but were able to steal the third set 26-24. The Jumbos however responded quickly and took the final set of the match 25-20 to defeat the Gulls. Senior Hayley Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) led the Gulls with 12 kills with sophomore Amy Grigg (Vernon, Conn.) having nine kills on 17 attempts for a .471 attack percentage. Casey Ward (Monroe, Conn.) led Endicott with 42 assists while current five-time TCCC Libero of the Week Brittany Nolan (Monroe, Conn.) had 28 digs.

In the second game of the night, the Gulls were beaten by a tough Wellesley team by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-21. Junior Steph Wiese was the top kills-getter with six kills and Casey Ward was able to tally another 16 assists in the three game set. Brittany Nolan led the Gulls in digs again as she had another 13 digs for a total of 41 on the day.

The losses dropped the Gulls to 12-6 (5-0 TCCC) while Tufts improved to a perfect 13-0 on the season. Wellesley's victory moved them to 14-3 this year.

The Blue and Green continue their play in the Tufts Invitational on Saturday when they play Elmhurst and Polytechnic at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Tufts University.
