Women’s Ice Hockey Downs Nichols, 4-0

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Behind a 16-save shutout from freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden), the Endicott women's ice hockey team blanked Nichols 4-0 on Saturday evening at Levy Rink.

The Gulls were equally impressive on offense in their second game of the season as the visitors outshot the Bison, 51-16.

Freshman forward Allison Young (Cumberland, Maine) opened up the scoring at the 2:19 mark of the first period (unassisted), while classmate Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) registered the first-ever shorthanded goal in program history at 15:58 of the second to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.

Klein then set up Dynnea Bezona (Fairbanks, Alaska) for her first collegiate goal at 17:01 of the third, and Danielle Comorre (Tujunga, Calif.) followed with her first goal of the season 42-seconds later to lock up the victory.

Jonsson was tested early in the matchup as the netminder made a period-high nine saves in the first before stopping six in the second and only one in the third to register 16 saves total in the win (2-0-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott posted 13 shots in the first, 15 in the second, and a period-high 23 in the third.
  • Klein, Meaghan Farragher (Bridgewater, Mass.), Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.), Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.), and Holly Erbe (Woodbine, Md.) all finished with a plus-2 rating on the ice for the Gulls.
  • Klein led the team in shots with nine total, while Linnéa Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) had six, and Meredith Vlachos (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Comorre each had five.
  • Bezona went 15-for-20 in the face-off circle.
  • As a team, Endicott went 37-for-68 (.544) at the face-off dot.
  • The three starts picked in the game were Klein (1), Jonsson (2), Comorre (3).

FOR THE FOES

  • Lindsay O'Connell (Danvers, Mass.) stopped a career-high 47 shots in the loss (0-2-0).
  • Samantha DiReda (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 18-for-27 (.667) on faceoffs for the Bison.
  • Kelly Ferreira (North Falmouth, Mass.) and DiReda tied for the team-high in shots with three apiece.

Endicott (2-0-0) takes on Johnson & Wales University on the road next Friday at 6:05 p.m. Nichols (0-2-0) hosts Manhattanville on Monday, November 2 at 6:40 p.m.
