Gulls Improve to 5-0 in CCC; Game Two Suspended Due to Weather

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott softball team traveled to Roger Williams for Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon. In game one, junior Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) delivered a game-winning hit in the eighth inning that scored junior Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) for the go-ahead run in a 3-2 extra-innings win. Game two was suspended after two innings due to rain and poor field conditions and will resume at a later date. Endicott improves to 8-7 (5-0 CCC) while the Hawks fall to 6-8 (2-3 CCC).

Endicott will returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 7th as they host Babson for a non-conference double header starting at 3:00 p.m. Roger Williams plays tomorrow, April 4th for a CCC doubleheader at Western New England beginning at noon.

Game One: Endicott 3, Roger Williams 2

In game one junior Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) controlled the circle for the Blue and Green as she hurled her eighth complete game of the season improving to 6-3. The sophomore recorded four strikeouts on 35 batters faced while closing the game out with a strikeout in the bottom of the eighth with the game-tying run in scoring position. 

The Gulls got on the board in the top of the first after freshman Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) reached home on a two-out, throwing error by the Hawks shortstop that prolonged the inning. After a scoreless second inning by both sides the Blue and Green would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of junior Sam DiBella (Danvers, Mass.) would sacrifice to left field that plated Stratton from third for her second run of the game.

Roger Williams tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth after junior Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) singled to right center to bring junior Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) around from third for the Hawks first run. Freshman Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) would follow with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring sophomore Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) from third base for the game-tying run.

Both sides worked offensively to take the lead but neither could capitalize as the game was forced into extra innings. In the top of the eighth and Corda placed on second base, Hoffman singled to left field to plate Corda and take the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Blake recorded her fourth and final strikeout with runners on first and second and two outs to notch the third out and secure the 3-2 Endicott victory.
