INTERNSHIP INSIGHT: Tim Wang Learns Marketing Strategies With Massachusetts Pirates

BEVERLY, Mass. — Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Tim Wang (Marlborough, Mass.), who is a sport management major and a member of the baseball team, recently completed an internship with the Massachusetts Pirates. Here's a look into his internship experience.

1) Why The Massachusetts Pirates?

While looking for an internship this year, I was looking for a marketing internship within the sports industry because I gained an interest in the marketing aspect of sports after taking the Sports Marketing & Promotion class during the fall semester. I knew that a couple of my peers completed a marketing internship with the Pirates last year and they said it was a great opportunity so I decided to apply. Also, since it is about 20 minutes from my house, it made it very convenient for me as well.

2) What was the process like to obtain your internship?

The process for me was not as difficult as others. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to find an internship that was relatively close to my home and since I was looking for a marketing internship, I knew that a couple of my peers had interned for the Massachusetts Pirates in the past so I decided to apply. After I sent out the initial email to them, the hiring manager replied back quickly and we set up an interview. After the interview, I was hired a couple of days later and started working immediately.

3) Describe your overall internship experience.

My overall experience with the Massachusetts Pirates was great. I was fortunate to work with Adrian Figueroa who is the Director of Marketing and Community Outreach for the Pirates and it was a great experience to work for him and learn how marketing works within a professional team.

4) What have you learned from your internship?

I learned a lot of different marketing strategies that a professional team does to get people familiar with the organization. The Pirates are not a big team compared to the Patriots but it was great to see how a smaller team markets their team differently rather than one of those big professional teams. I also learned different ways to advertise and promote the team to local businesses around the area by talking with them on the phone.

5) How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?

This internship will help me in my career because it has given me real-life experience on how to market for a professional sports team. I have learned the different strategies on how to market and I will be able to use what I learned here and apply it during a future internship and job.
