Women’s Tennis Competes At NEWITTs

NORTHAMPTON/SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The Endicott women's tennis team competed at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) over the weekend, hosted by Smith College and Mount Holyoke College, respectively.

Headlining the tournament for the Gulls were Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla.), Ashley Keaveney (Exeter, N.H.), Abbey Fleming (Wolfeboro, N.H.), and Yolanda Mendonca (Albany, N.Y.)

This weekend's tournament format featured a best-of-three series that included two singles matches and one doubles flight (each slot counted as one point).

Teams were made up of two to three student-athletes, some of which mixed squads across New England.

Brackets in the tournament featured four draws (A, B, C, D) that were comprised of a first round, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, along with consolation rounds for the last three parts of the bracket.

In the "B Draw" of the tournament, the duo of Martinelli/Keaveney advanced to the Consolation Semifinals before falling to Nichols, 3-0.

Martinelli compiled a 2-1 record in singles matches with victories over Trinity (8-6) and Springfield (8-5). Keaveney also helped the Gulls go 3-0 against the Pride with an 8-6 in singles and an 8-7 (2) triumph in doubles with Martinelli.

In the "D Draw" portion, Fleming and Mendonca won the Consolation Finals over Wheaton by a 2-1 score.

Mendonca claimed an 8-2 victory in her singles match, while the duo secured a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) triumph in doubles to win the Consolation Finals.
