Gulls Kick Off Spring Season At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In their first matches of spring competition, the Endicott women's rugby team traveled to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Crimson 7's tournament. The Gulls faced a challenging gauntlet of opponents including, Harvard, U.S. Naval Academy, University of New Hampshire and Sacred Heart. Finishing the day with a record of 1-5, the Gulls will return to action next Saturday hosting Salve Regina in a 15's match.

Plagued with injuries, the Gulls opened the day falling to Harvard 30-0. Despite the setback of having several key players out, coach Bob Ryman was impressed with his team's overall performance and potential.

"We were in the right spots but struggled a bit with tackling," said coach Ryman. "One of the biggest keys to 7's play is tackling and we struggled at times to make plays while Harvard was rucking very well."

In the second match of the day the Blue and Green squared off against UNH, falling 19-10. Endicott started the match going up 10-0 in the opening minutes of the match.

"It was a good hard fought match for both teams," said coach Ryman. "We played hard through the first half but ran out of gas during the second."

Next, the Gulls played two hard-fought matches against Navy "A" falling 24-10 before beating Navy "B" 29-5.

"We had several great scoring opportunities against Navy "A" that we were unable to capitalize on," said coach Ryman. "Navy had a great team and was able to capitalize on our mistakes and ultimately won them the match."

Endicott finished the day squaring off against Sacred Heart in a tight 24-15 match.

Throughout the day, the Gulls were led by sophomores Sophia Hatzis (West Roxbury, Mass.), Maggie Birge (Rindge, N.H.), Reagan Cerci (Easton, Mass.) and Lauren Hervieux (Lincoln, R.I.) as well as freshman Jordan Zak (Brimfield, Mass.)
