Gulls Four Game Win Streak Snapped on the Road at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R. I. – The Endicott women's basketball team traveled to Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup. Despite the game high 13 points from freshman Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) the Gulls fell in a tough 53-45 final. Endicott drops their first game of February and sit at 10-10 (6-7 CCC) while the Hawks improve to 15-6 (12-2 CCC) and hold their #2 slot in the CCC ranks.

Endicott will take the court next on Wednesday evening as they host CCC foe Nichols for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. The Hawks also tip-off next on Wednesday as they host Curry for a 5:30 p.m. for a conference battle.

Overall both sides put up solid shooting numbers as Roger Williams put up 40.4% from the field compared to Endicott's 34.7% while the Hawks edged the Gulls from the charity stripe by 10%, 76.6% to 66.7%. Shaw led both sides on the stat board with 13 points while she was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and four steals. Junior Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.) was right behind Shaw with 12 points, four assists, three steals and two blocks while junior Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) led for the Hawks with 12 points and three steals.

Roger Williams posted a strong bench game scoring an impressive 27 points while putting up 21 points off Endicott turnovers while the Blue and Green put up 10. Despite the strong forward play the Hawks edged the Gulls in the paint 32-20.

The first half was an absolute battle on the stat sheet as the Hawks just took a 31-25 advantage at the end of the first 20 minutes of play. For the Gulls Cuddy led both sides in the half with nine points scoring 4-of-9 from the field while Roger Williams was led by senior Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill.) with seven points of her own. Shaw led the Blue and Green in rebounds with four while the Hawks crashed the boards as both Lutz and sophomore Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) had four rebounds.

Both sides put up strong shooting marks as both sat at 28.6% (2-of-7) from long range while Roger Williams went 42.3% (11-of-26) from the field to Endicott's 34.6% (9-of-26). Each team was solid from the charity stripe shooting in the 70's while both the Gulls and the Hawks had two players each go a perfect 2-of-2.

In the second half Shaw came up big leading the way with nine points shooting 4-of-8 from the field while the Hawks answered back with strong bench play with six from Battista. Both sides struggled from long range as Endicott held Roger Williams to zero and shooting 3-of-13 of their own while the Hawks made up for their long-range struggles going 75% (6-of-8) from the charity stripe.

Endicott worked to stay in the game staying at a five point gap throughout most of the second half but the Hawks were able to pull away in the final minutes to secure the 53-45 victory.
