Men’s Rugby Goes 4-0 In Spring Season Opener

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men's rugby team posted a 4-0 combined record against Salve Regina University and Western New England University (WNEU) in 7s and 15s action on Saturday afternoon at Hempstead Stadium.

Prior to their games against Salve Regina and WNEU, the Gulls honored seniors Keenan Bassett (Lowell, Mass.), Matt Camilleri (Chester, Conn.), Steve Carlson (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Anthony Carter (Manchester, Conn.), Justin Klanica (Cheshire, Conn.), Tyler LaChioma (Monroe, Conn.), David Lang (North Attleboro, Mass.), Nate Long (Ashburnham, Mass.), Mavrick MacEachern (Manchester, Mass.), Chris Morrison (Weymouth, Mass.), Ryan Stanek (Cheshire, Conn.), Brian Sussingham (Yonkers, N.Y.), and Rob Wimpory (Groveland, Mass.) as a part of Senior Day for their contributions to the men's rugby program over their respective careers.

SALVE REGINA - 7s (Endicott 19-5) | 15s (Endicott 21-19)

The Gulls rallied back from an early 5-0 hole with 19 unanswered points in their 7s game against Salve Regina, and also turned a 14-0 deficit around into a 21-19 win in their 15s game to complete the sweep versus the Seahawks.

WNEU – 7s (Endicott 28-5) | 15s (Endicott 17-10)

Sussingham got Endicott's offense going in 7s play with the scored tied at 0-0 when he saved a potential WNEU try from scoring by punching the ball out of the grasp of a Golden Bears' would-be-scorer from behind at the 30-yard-line.

Marc Lerebours (Norwalk, Conn.) proceeded to track the loose ball down near the 15-yard line, and immediately juked one defender out of his shoes upon picking up the ball and sprinted down the sideline. Lerebours eventually made it to the 50-yard-line where he left another WNEU player in the dust with a stutter-step-juke back towards the middle of the field to create space for a potential try. The final defender for the Golden Bears hurried back to cut-off Lerebours near the sideline at his own 25-yard-line, but Lerebours quickly pitched the ball backwards to a hustling Sussingham, who got himself back into the play, for an untouched try in the center of the field.

After a successful conversion, the Gulls never looked back taking the 7s game 28-5, before wrapping up their final game of the day in 15s with a 17-10 triumph over WNEU.

Endicott (9-3) will play Plymouth State University and UMass Dartmouth next Sunday, at home, at 1 and 3 PM, respectively.
