Gulls compete in Beast of the East

PORTSMOUTH, R.I.. – The Endicott men's club rugby team traveled to Portsmouth, R.I. for the Beast of the East 15s Tournament on Saturday facing stiff Division One competition in Bryant University and University of Maine-Orono.

The Gulls opened the day falling 22-0 to a tough Bryant squad. "We were down several key starters," said Endicott men's rugby head coach Bob Ryman. "Bryant came out with a quick try and didn't look back. We played poorly and could not get back on our game."

Next, the Gulls squared off against the University of Maine falling 28-0 to the Black bears. "The University of Maine was a big physical team and came out swinging and scored 21 unanswered points in the first half," said coach Ryman. " We played an excellent second half, holding them to only one try. However, we could not produce any points." The University of Maine went on to lose a close match to Plymouth State in the semifinals.

The Gulls were led by sophomore Max Tuttle (Pittsfield, N.H.), junior Thomas Oliva (Rutland, Mass.), and senior Brian Sussingham (Yonkers, N.Y.).

The Gulls will return to action next weekend traveling to the DII National Qualifier 7s in Canton, Mass.
