Women’s Soccer Bows Out in CCC Semifinals

BRISTOL, R.I. – Endicott's women's soccer team held Roger Williams to a scoreless tie through 110 minutes of play, but could not win their second consecutive shootout of the 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament. The Gulls fell 3-2 in the penalty kicks contest and were eliminated in the semi-finals after not scoring or conceding a goal through two games.

Endicott exits the tournament with a record of 11-5-4, while the second-seeded Hawks (11-6-3) will travel north to take on the top-seeded Fighting Scots of Gordon College in Saturday's CCC Championship game.

Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) knocked in the first shot of the shootout for RWU to put the Hawks up 1-0 and goalkeeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) turned away the shot by Endicott senior Micaela Hogan (Salisbury, Mass.) to keep RWU on top.

The Gulls were able to tie the shootout thanks to a stop by sophomore goalie Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.) and a successful strike from junior Lexi Dussi (Milford, Mass.) answered with a shot of her own to tie the shootout at one.

However, Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) and Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) stepped up and buried their opportunities for Roger Williams and Endicott's Clare Mansfield (Stoneham, Mass.) fired over the goal.

Endicott senior Christine Silva (Stoneham, Mass.) put in her attempt to keep it a 3-2 Hawks lead and Donnelly made a diving stab to stop an attempt by her counterpart, Jaques, to give Endicott a chance to extend the shootout. Jaques, though, stepped back in net and stopped the attempt by Chelsea Garlock (Meriden, Conn.) to send the Hawks to the championship game.

Endicott outshot Roger Williams 11-9, though the hosts had a 7-5 edge in the first half. After the break the squads played a much tighter game, with only four shots combined between the sides.

The Blue and Green actually put through the game's first goal with fifteen minutes to play, but it wouldn't count for them. Garlock played the ball to the end line and found senior Vanessa Caruccio (Winthrop, Mass.), who slotted the ball into the back of the net, but the flag had gone up indicating Caruccio was offsides.

Endicott outshot the Hawks 3-1 over both overtime periods and had the only corner kick opportunity, but neither team was able to score, setting up the shootout.

Donnelly and Jaques each made three saves to preserve the shutout for their team.

This is the third consecutive season that the Hawks have eliminated Endicott in Bristol. The last two seasons were both in the CCC Championship game, with the Gulls falling in overtime last year and by penalty kicks two seasons ago.
