Women's Soccer Opens Homecoming Weekend with Conference Win

Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. – On a foggy Friday night at Endicott Stadium, the Endicott women's soccer team needed just one goal and a solid defensive effort to begin Homecoming festivities with a 1-0 victory over Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. Endicott improves to 9-5 (5-2 CCC) with the victory, while the Bison fall to 5-6-2 (2-3-2 CCC).

Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.) added to her team-leading goal total when she finished a header off of a corner kick ten minutes into the game. The assist went to junior Christina Vellucci (Saugus, Mass.), who took most of Endicott's eight corners in the game. It was the eleventh goal of the season for Pepin, who leads the team with 24 points, while Vellucci picked up her first assist to go with four goals on the season.

For the second straight game, the Gulls locked down on defense and outshot their opponents by a wide margin, as Endicott fired 19 shots on goal to just one from the visitors. Pepin had 11 shots on her own, four of them on net, as she found herself free for headers on several corners and several times nearly duplicated her opening goal. Substitute Lexi Dussi (Boxford, Mass.) had two shots, while six other Gulls chipped in single attempts.

Captain Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) had the only shot of the game for the Bison, an attempt on goal from far out in the final three minutes of the game.

The Green and Blue also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, while each team was caught offsides one time.

Junior Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) had a strong game in net for the visitors, making seven saves and keeping Nichols in the game time after time.

Freshman keeper Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.) played the first half of the game for Endicott and was not tested, while sophomore Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, N.H.) had to make just one easy save late in the game as the tandem combined for the shutout.

Endicott has now won three of their last four contests and allowed just one goal in those matches. The Gulls will play their final home game of the regular season next Wednesday at 7:00 pm when they host Wentworth in conference test. The Bison will play their next game, also in conference on Tuesday when they travel to Western New England for a 3:30 pm kickoff.
