Men’s Volleyball Splits Matches On Final Day Of JWU Tip-Off

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Endicott men's volleyball team split a pair of matches against Lasell College and Johnson & Wales University (JWU) on Saturday afternoon. Endicott fell to Lasell, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22), but bounced back versus JWU, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 17-15), to claim its first win of the 2016 season (1-3).

MATCH ONE: Lasell 3, Endicott 0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22)

Jeffrey Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) guided the Lasers to their first victory of the year with 17 kills (.452 hitting percentage), nine digs, and three service aces.

John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) and Alex Wasik (Milford, Mass.) highlighted Endicott's offense as both student-athletes put home a team-high eight kills in the loss.

Late in the first set with Lasell leading 20-19, Tristan Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) halted a potential comeback bid from the Gulls with back-to-back kills that eventually pushed the Lasers to a 25-21 victory. Lasell then went on to take set two by using a 7-0 run with the scored tied at 12-12 after playing through ten ties and four lead changes. In set three, Davis broke a 22-all tie with his seventh and final kill of the match before an attack error and a service ace completed the sweep for the Lasers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 21-3 in the all-time series against Lasell, which dates back to 2000.
  • Lasell has won its last two season openers.

FOR THE FOES

  • Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) facilitated the attack with a match-high 34 assists.
  • The Lasers notched one block solo and 10 block assists. Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio) led the team with three block assists.

MATCH TWO: Endicott 3, JWU 2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 17-15)

Trailing 15-14 in the final set of the match, Endicott rallied behind back-to-back kills from Osborne and Wasik, and a solo block from Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) to walk-off with a 3-2 victory over JWU (2-5). The fifth set alone saw 15 ties and five lead changes occur.

Endicott freshman Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) fueled the Gulls offensively with a career-high 19 kills (.357 hitting percentage) alongside three digs and one service ace. Wasik added nine kills, while Riorden and Dan Seaver (Milford, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills apiece.

Freshman setter Devin Racey (Voorheesville, N.Y.) facilitated the offense with a career-high 47 assists, and also registered his first career double-double by compiling a team-high 13 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With today's win, Endicott leads the all-time series, 17-9.
  • Riorden also added 12 digs, and one block solo to the victory.
  • Seth Braquet (Destrehan, La.) tallied a career-high 13 digs, while Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) contributed 10 digs. Healy has now registered ten or more digs in three straight matches.

FOR THE FOES

  • Ryan Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Brendan Baker (Providence, R.I.) tied for the team-high in kills with 13 each. Baker also had ten digs to pick up a double-double.
  • Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) recorded his first career triple-double with 10 kills, 39 assists, and 16 digs. Ponce also added three block assists to his stat line and three service aces.
  • Alex Sada (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all student-athletes with 18 digs to go along with nine kills, two assists, and two service aces.

Endicott (1-3) will host Emerson College on Tuesday, January 26 at 7 p.m.
