BEVERLY, Mass. — Sean Quirk, a pioneering member of the Endicott Athletics & Recreation Department, is stepping down from his associate athletic director role to become the men's lacrosse head coach at his alma mater, Springfield College, effective as of Friday, May 30.
Quirk departs Endicott following a storied 28-year career as a coach and administrator.
"To reflect on 28 years at Endicott College is nearly impossible; what the Endicott community, student-athletes, alumni, faculty, and staff have meant during this period of my professional and personal life is indescribable," said Quirk. "I look back on the day, August 18, 1997, the late President Dr. Richard Wylie, Mr. Redman, and then Director of Athletics Larry Hiser provided me an opportunity at the age of 24 years old to be named the head men's lacrosse coach, my family and I are forever grateful. I thank the entire Endicott community, in particular current Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian Wylie and our staff in athletics, for always showing up at work and in the game of life."
As head coach of the men's lacrosse program (1998–2015), Quirk accumulated 243 victories, a .719 winning percentage (.918 in-conference), eight conference championships, and nine NCAA Division III Tournament appearances (five Second Round berths).
Quirk was named the Division III National Coach of the Year in 2008, New England Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2014, and the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Man of the Year in 2015.
Administratively, Quirk held multiple roles within the department (admissions liaison, Title IX coordinator, fundraiser), enriched the skills of emerging leaders and team captains through his collaborative work with EC L.E.A.D., provided oversight to our men's programs and coaching staffs, and managed day-to-day operations throughout his 18-year tenure as associate athletic director.
Quirk also served Endicott in two additional roles during his career, which have made an immeasurable impact on the growth of the College: assistant dean of admission (1997-2007), School of Sport Science adjunct faculty member (2017-present).
Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian A. Wylie, Ph.D., expressed his admiration for Quirk's numerous contributions to the College.
"It is hard to put in words the impact that Sean has had on Endicott and the countless lives that he has changed over the years. During his 28-year history with Endicott, he has had a front-row seat to witnessing Endicott as a fledgling institution in the early years, to the success story Endicott has now become," said Wylie. "As good as he is as an administrator, at his core, he is even a better coach, human being, and true friend. As sad as I am to see him go, I am excited that he gets to follow the footsteps of Coach Bugbee and the program he has built."
Quirk will take over at Springfield for his long-time mentor, Keith Bugbee, who recently wrapped up his 42nd season at the program's helm.
Under Bugbee's watch (1991-95), the former captain and goalie earned two All-America honors, led the Pride to an NCAA Division II National Championship in 1994, and received NCAA Division II Goalie of the Year honors in 1995.
Following graduation from Springfield, Quirk returned to the program as an assistant coach for two seasons (1996-97) before embarking on an illustrious career at Endicott.
