Softball Goes 1-1 On Day Three Of Spring Break Trip

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Endicott softball team split a pair of games against Fitchburg State University and Bethel (Minn.) University on Tuesday night at the NTC Spring Games. Endicott defeated Fitchburg State, 1-0, in game one but fell to Bethel in the nightcap, 6-0.

GAME ONE: Endicott 1, Fitchburg State 0

Endicott sophomore Laura Somerville (Suffield, Conn.) continued her red-hot start to the 2017 season with a three-hit, complete-game shutout versus the Falcons. Somerville also struck out a game-high five batters, retired the side in order twice, and issued two free passes.

Galen Kerr (Concord, Mass.) suffered the hard-luck loss (1-2) when Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) notched a walk-off RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to score pinch-runner Gina DeMilt (Princeton Junction, N.J.) from third for the game-winning run.

GAME TWO: Bethel 6, Endicott 0

Hannah Schmidt (Roseville, Minn.) was the difference for the Royals as the freshman pitcher picked up the win on four innings pitched, three hits, zero runs, one walk, and two strikeouts to go along with her solo shot in the fourth inning.

Maddie Fauth (Hutchinson, Minn.) also collected three RBI on a pair of doubles, while Anna Nichols (Minnetonka, Minn.) drove in a run in the fifth and Mariah Uphoff (Lakeville, Minn.) knocked in the game's final run on a ground out in the sixth. Fauth finished the contest going 3-for-3 with three RBI and one scored.

Meanwhile, Endicott freshman Michaela Hamill (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss (1-1) on four innings of work, four hits, three runs (all earned), two walks, and one punchout.

NOTES

  • Somerville has pitched a complete-game in both of her starts this season (2-0 record).
  • Cassidy Dvorsky (Estero, Fla.) roped a two-out double to right center in the top of the seventh for her first career collegiate hit, and the Gulls first extra-base hit of the year.
  • Endicott is 2-2 in night games in 2016-17.
