Beverly, MA - In a tough NECVA New England matchup, the Gulls pulled out to an early lead but could not hold off the Nighthawks of Newbury College, falling 2-3. After controlling much of the first game and winning 30-25, the Gulls were forced to rally from a 26-21 deficit to win a marathon game two, 40-38. Game three saw a reversal of roles as Newbury rallied from a 25-22 deficit to win 30-27 and game four would see them win by the same 30-27 score, forcing a deciding fifth game. Unable to come out ready, the Gulls quickly committed 2 net violations and 3 missed serves giving Newbury 5 of their first 6 points and were forced to play catch up again. Trailing 9-14, the Gulls sided out and sent Jeremy Fontaine back to the service line. Following two quick points and a Newbury timeout, EC scored twice more to tie the game at 14. Newbury rose to the challenge and ended the match with a side out and block to close out their come from behind victory.
Endicott set new school team records in two categories; attack attempts with 202 and kills with 85. Solid individual contributions were Jeremy Fontaine's 25 kills and five aces along with Eddie Marchand and Eric Hunter also chipping in double-digit kill performances with 22 and 14 consecutively. Russ Friedland moved into second place on the assists in a match list, with his 66 assist performance and Brandon Ecker picked up a season high 21 digs.
Newbury was led by Erik Kostanski's 25 kill performance and Jay Neveu's 18. Brian Goodhind ran the offense well, dishing out 68 assists while Dean LaSalle picked up a team high 8 digs.
The Gulls will now return to action this Saturday, when they will travel to \#6 Steven's Tech for a 4:00 PM match.
