April 17, 2008

BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott College Director of Athletics Brian Wylie is pleased to announce the hiring of Matthew Hess as the new men's and women's golf coach effective immediately. Hess takes over a men's program that posted a second place finish at The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships in 2007.

Hess, who is currently the senior PGA Assistant Golf Professional at The Essex County Club, hopes to guide the Gulls to their second TCCC title, a championship the Blue and Green first won in 2006. A seasoned golfer himself, Hess has played competitively for over 13 years with many amateur and professional tournament wins on his resume.

A 2005 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Hess carries a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park Management with a focus in Professional Golf Management. He has spent the last three years as the senior PGA Assistant Golf Pro at Essex, teaching private and group lessons and serving as a tournament and invitational director for the club.

Hess was a Gazette NIE Capital District Junior Champion in 2000, a year before he passed the PAT at the Penn State Blue Course. Hess's playing experience also features a 2003 win at the PGM Open where he shot a 3-under par 69. In 2006 Hess tied for fourth in the Acushnet Pro-Assistant New England section tournament.

Matthew will be in charge of the Endicott men's Div. III squad which competes out of The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Hess has been involved in the organization and direction of the TCCC Tournament, serving as a liaison and tournament organizer for the past two seasons. Hess will also oversee the direction of Endicott's newly formed women's club varsity golf team. The women's squad competed at the Wellesley Invitational last year in its inaugural campaign.

"Coach Hess brings an unparalleled commitment and passion for elevating the golf program here at Endicott," said Wylie. "His experience at one of the most prestigious golf courses in the country, tied in with his holistic approach of teaching the importance of the technical, physical, mental and strategic elements of the game are precisely what this program needs."
