Endicott Downs Wheaton In Season Opener, 4-2

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team opened the 2017 season with a 4-2 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) this afternoon at North Field.

The Lyons got on the board first, but the Gulls responded with a quick goal from Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) at 7:48 and never looked back.

Endicott also received goals from Emily Hirtle (Rowley, Mass.), Cameron Molinare (Simsbury, Conn.), and Jaylin Grabau (Lynnfield, Mass.) to secure the win. Meanwhile, Cogliano finished the contest with two points as the junior forward set up Hirtle's tally at 13:22 of the first to give the Gulls a 2-1 advantage, at the time.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Freshman goaltender Taylor Farrin (Danvers, Mass.) made her collegiate debut in net for Endicott and made one save. She is now 1-0 on the season.
  • Endicott registered nine corners compared to Wheaton's four.
  • Lauren Whitney (Poway, Calif.) added an assist on Endicott's fourth goal of the contest.
  • The Gulls outshot the Lyons 51-6.

FOR THE FOES

  • Wheaton's netminder, Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn.), recorded 31 saves and is now 0-1 on the season.
  • Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) tallied both of the Lyons' goals, while Jordan Brazis-Erble (Slingerlands, N.Y.) earned one assist in the contest.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (1-0) returns to action on Monday, September 4 when the Gulls travel to Salem State for a 6 p.m. contest. Wheaton (0-1) is on the road at Regis on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m.
