Box Score

MILTON, Mass. – Curry senior quarterback Zach Cavanaugh (Marshfield, Mass.) threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns as the Colonels cruised past visiting Endicott, 37-6, in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division showdown Saturday in Milton. Curry notched its fifth-straight win to improve to 5-2 overall, and remained unbeaten in Boyd Division play at 4-0. The Gulls fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Boyd Division action.

Curry collected all the points it would need on the day in the opening frame, thanks to a 36-yard field goal by junior Matt Alksninis (Mansfield, Mass.) and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Cavanaugh to senior tight end Jeff Hibbard (Dedham, Mass.). A 17-point second quarter stretched the Colonels’ advantage to 27-0 at the half. Curry got an 11-yard touchdown run from senior fullback John Sughrue (Fremont, N.H.) and a 35-yard scoring pass from Cavanaugh to junior wide receiver Jon Chattman (Woonsocket, R.I.) to take a 24-0 lead. Then with less than four minutes remaining before the break, Alksninis connected on the second of his three field goals on the day, this one from 28 yards out.

At 12:21 of the third frame, Cavanaugh threw a touchdown pass to his third different receiver, as senior wide-out Jonathan Rodriguez (Leominster, Mass.) hauled in a six-yard scoring strike. The hosts capped off their scoring early in the fourth quarter when Alksninis made good on a 24-yard field goal attempt.

The Colonels’ defense stifled Endicott’s offense for much of the game, intercepting sophomore quarterback \#Phil Konopka\# (Shelton, Conn.) twice and sacking him three times. The Gulls collected 66 of their 181 total yards on the final drive of the game, avoiding the shutout with 33 seconds remaining when Konopka found junior split end \#Mike Drinkwater\# (Hamilton, Mass.) in the corner of the end zone from nine yards out.

Curry held a significant edge in total yards (426-181) and time of possession (34-26). The Colonels also limited the Gulls to 55 yards on the ground while rolling up 244 rushing yards themselves.

Cavanaugh finished 17 of 28 and also rushed seven times for 55 yards. Senior running back Jamaal Woods (Malden, Mass.) passed the century mark with 105 yards on 12 carries. Chattman had five receptions for 87 yards. Konopka went 13-of-26 for 110 yards, while sophomore running back \#Mike Lane\# (Medfield, Mass.) ran for a team-high 50 yards on 12 attempts.

Defensively, Curry was led by senior linebacker Dan Dawson (Stoneham, Mass.), who amassed a game-high nine tackles (7 solo), including 3.5 tackles for loss (-10 yards). Sophomore linebacker \#Kevin Eagan\# (West Hartford, Conn.) paced the Endicott defense with seven solo stops.

Next Saturday, Curry hosts Plymouth State University at 1 p.m., while Endicott returns home for a noon match-up with Western New England College.
