Gulls Take Second at Rain-Shortened UNE Invitational

Kennebunkport, Maine- In a rain shortened UNE Invitational, the Endicott men's golf team finished second in the four team field, just three strokes back of Saint Joseph's College. Endicott now travels to Southwick, Mass. to compete in the two day ECAC DIII New England Championships this weekend.

With tough conditions from the start, the Gulls shot well on the nine holes as all five golfers finished with scores in the 30's. Senior Austin Teal (Loudonville, N.Y.) and junior Alex Viola (Brunswick, Maine) shot identical 38's to finish in a tie for fourth place. Endicott's three remaining golfers, Drew Benshoff (Concord, Mass.), Dan Negus (Pembroke, Mass.) and Ben Palazzo (Farmington, Conn.) all fired rounds of 39 to finish tied for seventh in the 20 man field.

TOP QUOTE

"The weather was tough today with the conditions being what they were with torrential rain for the majority of the day," said head coach Tom Smith. "I'm happy with how our guys performed on just the nine holes with everyone keeping scores in the 30's with those conditions. We were able to use this as just another bit of preparation for the ECAC Championships this weekend and we'll look to compete at a high level after last year's tie for fifth."

BEYOND THE CARD

  • Teal and Viola both finished three strokes back of medalist honors as the low round of the day was a 35 from Saint Joseph's Cam Letourneau.
  • It is the second straight competition in which Teal has tied for the team lead as he previously tied Dan Negus for the team lead at the CCC Championship Qualifier this past Tuesday.
