The Gulls Take Down the Seahawks in an Overtime Thriller

The Gulls Take Down the Seahawks in an Overtime Thriller

Oct. 23, 2004

EC Field Hockey scored their way back to a 5-4 overtime victory against the Seahawks today at EC's homecoming weekend. Entering today's game, Salve was undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and has suffered only one loss this season. Today's win improves Endicott's overall record to 12-5 and 5-2 in the CCC, while the Seahawks drop to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in the CCC.

Salve took the early lead in the first half when Seahawk freshman Whitney Bushee scored just 4:42 into the game. EC battled back pressuring every scoring opportunity possible. On a broken offensive penalty corner, EC's senior Jen McCormack crossed the ball in front of the net to senior KD Balentine to finish off the goal with 11:11 left in the half. The Seahawks dug down and within one minute of EC's second goal, Carolyn Salucci tied the game for Salve. This game continued to be a back and forth battle and EC retaliated to take the lead going into second half. Senior forward Kim Doody began the play by weaving down the right sideline forcing a free hit outside EC's offensive circle. Junior Ashley Wallace took the hit and set up senior Jen McCormack perfectly to run onto the ball off the left post and score. McCormack's goal gave the Gulls the 3-2 lead at half.

The second half started similar to the first. The Seahawk's forward Megan Broderick scored Salve's third goal just 2:04 into the half. The Gulls proved their offensive power by fighting back to push them ahead 4-3 at the 28:54 mark. This time it was EC's Balentine who got her stick on the ball from a pass from Doody. Balentine was able to one touch the ball past Salve's goalkeeper, Brook Bowley. The Seahawks managed to tie the game with 4:08 left in the second half when Broderick scored her second goal of the game, forcing the game into overtime.

Playing the first of two 15-minute sudden victory overtime halves with seven aside, EC managed to dominate the play and out shot Salve 5-0. It took 6:29 before EC was able to put one home to win this overtime thriller. The play unfolded as Ashley Wallace stopped a Salve forward in her tracks and feed the ball up to EC's forward Kim Doody. Doody and EC's freshman Jennifer Rheaume both managed to get two quick shots off onto the goalkeepers pads, but it was sophomore midfielder Caitlin Murray who managed to finish it off for the Gulls. Murray played the ball of the rebound of Bowley's pads and fired a shot in to end the game.

The Gulls defense was lead by senior sweeper Lisa Cote and freshman back Ashley Meunier. EC's goalkeeper Erin Curry had 7 saves.

EC looks to end their season with another victory over Keene State on Wednesday October 27 at 3:30. Wednesday is EC's last regular season game and will be Senior Day for the EC's nine seniors.
