May 1, 2008

BEVERLY, Mass. - Four members of the Endicott College softball team have been selected as members of the The Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Conference team, with three other receiving honorable mention, as announced by Commissioner Greg Kaye on Thursday. Junior Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, Mass.) was named the TCCC Player of the Year while head coach Mark Veilleux captured Coach of the Year honors.

Endicott catcher Meghan Sargent was selected as TCCC Player of the Year for the second-straight season after leading the Gulls in hits (41), doubles (10), HR (6), RBI (31), and total bases (69). The junior collected three hits in a game four times this year, including a performance against Wentworth Institute of Technology in which she went 3-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI.

Joining Meghan on the All-Conference First Team are teammates Paula McGinn (Lynn, Mass.) and Danielle Sargent (Sabattus, Maine). Senior Paula McGinn was a menace on the base paths this season, swiping 21 bags in 23 attempts. She stole two or more bases on five different occasions this year. Her .433 on-base percentage coupled with her ability to steal bases allowed her to lead the team in runs scored with 36. Senior Danielle Sargent led the team in batting average this season at .359, collecting 10 multi-hit games in the process. She also had a team-high 13 sacrifice hits while finishing second in runs (30), hits (37), and on-base percentage (.455).

Senior Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, Conn.) was named to the All-Conference Second Team. Pearson was second on the team in both home runs (4) and RBI (27). The senior back-stop collected 11 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI performances. On one of her best days, Pearson went 2-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI to lead Endicott past Regis College.

Sophomore Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass.), shortstop Jenna Lazar (Milton, Mass.), and pitcher Maria Mangine (Lockport, N.Y.) all received honorable mention. MacDonald delivered several big games for Endicott this year including a 2-3 performance against Trinity College in which she drove in four runs. The sophomore third baseman also delivered a walk-off single against her former school, the nationally-ranked Wheaton College Lyons, to give the Gulls a 6-5 victory. Sophomore Jenna Lazar was a vacuum at shortstop this season, committing just one error in 58 attempts. Lazar, who led the team with a .492 on-base percentage, had eight multi-hit games on the year.

Head coach Mark Veilleux was named the TCCC Coach of the Year after leading Endicott to a conference-best 22-2 record. In his 14th year as head coach, Veilleux has already led the Gulls to eight conference championships, including a current streak of five-straight TCCC Championships. Overall the Blue and Green are 217-28-1 under his tenure in conference play for a sparkling .882 winning percentage. The Gulls are looking to capture their sixth-straight TCCC Championship this week. Their title defense begins Thursday when they face the winner of the University of New England and Gordon College at Endicott Softball Field in Beverly, Mass. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. or 20 minutes following the completion of game one.
