Gulls Storm Back on Day Two to Claim Bowdoin Invitational by Two Strokes

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Endicott golf team trailed by two strokes after the conclusion of play on day one of the Bowdoin Invitational and then trimmed 11 strokes off that effort on day two, to win the event by two strokes after two days of play.

Endicott's two-day total of 607 bested Amherst' and Trinity's rounds of 609, while Bodwoin (616) and Tufts (622) rounded out the top-five in the field. 

Tyler Baker (Falmouth, Maine), the reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Golfer of the Week, kept up his torrid pace, finishing tied for first in the 80-man field, with a two-day total of +4, 148 (75-53). His opening round on the Brunswick Country Club saw him record the first hole-in-one during a competition in program history, as the junior aced the par-3, 112 yard, fifth hole. He finished with the ace (which was good for an eagle), as well as two other birdies during day one, before finishing with four birdies on day two to close it out.

Teammate Brady Burke (Bedford, N.H.) knocked four strokes off in between his two rounds, posting a +5, 77 on day one, and a +1, 73 on day two, to finish second for the Gulls and tied for fourth in the tournament with his two-day total of 150. 

Endicott saw a trio of Gulls cluster in the top third of the field to round out the scoring after two days, as Frank Mahoney (Braintree, Mass.)Hadyn Kornusky (Topsfield, Mass.) and Will Pierce (Melrose, Mass.) finished tied for 17th, tied for 22nd, and tied for 26th, respectively.

Mahoney finished +11, 155 (77-78) for the two-day tournament, while Kornusky finished +12, 156 for the tournament after posting an opening round of 81 before closing strong with a +3, 75 on day two. Pierce closed the Endicott scoring with his round of +5, 77 on Sunday, which followed his opening round of +8 80.

BEYOND THE SCORE CARDS

  • According to all available data, Baker's hole-in-one was the first ace during a competition in program history.
  • The team win was Endicott's first at the Bowdoin Invitational since 2015, when the Gulls won the 11 team invitationals on Sept. 13, 2015. 
  • The Gulls have also finished second twice in between Bowdoin Invitational victories for the Gulls at the Brunswick Country Club.

The Gulls will mentally prepare for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship Fall Qualifier on Thursday, to be held at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, R.I..
