Men’s Golf Places 33rd Overall At NCAA Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Endicott men's golf team finished 33rd overall out of 42 programs at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship, hosted by Oglethorpe University at the Mission Inn and Resort Club. Over the two-day championship, the Gulls produced a team score of 649 (326, 323) to finish ahead of nine other programs. The top 18 teams and top six individuals not on those squads will now advance to the final two days (May 18-19) of the tournament to decide both a team and individual national champion.

Drew Benshoff (Concord, Mass.) paced Endicott with a two-day score of 161 (82, 79, tied 130th overall), while Athan Goulos (Peabody, Mass.) notched a score of 162 (78, 84, tied 139th).

Ben Palazzo (Farmington, Conn.) and Carter Knox (Hinesburg, Vt.) followed with identical scores of 163 (86, 77 | 80, 83) to rank 146th overall, respectively. Dan Negus (Pembroke, Mass.) rounded out the group with a two-day score of 170 (86, 84, tied 186th).

BEYOND THE SCORECARD

  • Endicott shot par 79 times, and also carded 15 birdies and one eagle.
  • Knox shot even on Par 3 holes throughout the championship.
  • Palazzo was -1 on Par 5 holes. He also had the team's only eagle.
  • Knox and Goulos collected five birdies each.

YEAR IN REVIEW

Endicott captured its sixth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title since the 2006-07 season, and also saw Goulos, Palazzo, Benshoff, and Christopher Billings (Portland, Maine) earn All-Conference accolades. Goulos highlighted the group as the CCC Golfer of the Year, while head coach Tom Smith also earned his fourth consecutive CCC Coach of the Year honor.
