BEVERLY, MA - Endicott erased a 19-point deficit to send its Commonwealth Coast Conference game with Curry into overtime, where junior guard James Bartelle (Dorchester, MA/East Boston) sank the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds remaining in the extra session in an 80-79 Colonels' victory Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium.
Curry ran its record to 12-10 overall and 9-4 in the CCC while the Gulls fell to 14-8 overall (11-2 CCC). Endicott trailed 40-29 at halftime and the Colonels extended the lead to 19 points in the first five minutes of the second half. Curry shot 47 percent in the first half and 50 percent, while Endicott shot 40 percent in the first half, including 16 percent from beyond the arc and 43 percent in the game.
But the long EC comeback culminated in a Joey Burgos block at one end - Burgos pinned the ball against the backboard - and a Matt George layup at the other end with 9.4 seconds remaining.
After a Nemanja Marinkovic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro/Second Baptist School, TX) hook shot and a Zach Ellis (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) three-pointer, Endicott had its biggest lead of the night at 79075. It was also the first time in the ball game the Gulls enjoyed a lead.
But the feeling would be short-lived as Bartelle nailed a three and flushed a layup on a fast break feed from junior guard Stephen Prescod (Milton, MA/Lexington Christian), who played the entire 40 minutes. Bartelle finished with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds while Prescod put home seven points on 6-of-8 shooting and senior forward Raheim Lamb (Roxbury, MA/Boston English) had 16 points and seven rebounds.
Endicott got a game-high 27 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Marinkovic, who also had 12 rebounds and three steals. Senior co-captain Matt George (Dover, NH/Dover) added 15 points, four assists and three steals while sophomore guard Todd Burton (Lynn, MA/St. Mary's) picked 11 points and three steals.
Senior guard Michael Mohrin (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored 15 points with three assists for the Colonels, who also got 11 points from freshman guard Deryk Largesse (Sutton, MA/Sutton).
Endicott will look to get back on tract Tuesday night when it hosts Wentworth (8) while the Colonels host Anna Maria (8).
